I am bewildered, and not very impressed, by the visceral, naked, irrational hatred spat out by some defenders of Jason Arday. If a Cambridge professor is accused of being an unqualified charlatan, the accusation might be racially motivated. On the other hand it might not, depending on the evidence. The correct question to ask is not, ”What is the colour of his skin” but “Is it in fact true that he is an unqualified charlatan?” Please examine the evidence before leaping to the assumption of racism.
As for the idea that journalists “piled in on him” and “hounded him to his death”, most attacks were against Cambridge University. Jason himself was widely regarded as an unfortunate victim of foolish promotion way beyond his ability to cope. In appointing him to a professorship for which he was manifestly unqualified – in ludicrously describing him as “the best in the world” – certain senior members of the university showed a level of patronising condescension towards black people that could fairly be described as racism, while at the same time making him tragically vulnerable to such attacks as came his way.

I agree that there should have been due diligence, not least to protect Arday himself. Students were failed and academic standards were traduced. However, unless those who appointed Arday are literally sociopathic, they're going to have to live with this for the rest of their lives and I don't envy them that.

Of course their fate isn't as bad as that of Arday's loved ones, but there's quite a lot of middle ground between the extremist poles of 'the people who exposed his lies killed him and don't give a damn' and 'the people who appointed him killed him and don't give a toss.'

All suicides are complex and multi-causal. Attempting to reduce this tragedy to a simplistic narrative that supports the commentator's political viewpoint is unlikely to stop this happening again, which I'd have thought should be a compassionate, reasonable society's first concern.

Dear Davide,

Thanks for your views of the Selution De Novo presentation given at CRT. As usual, they are well founded and worthy of a response. We agree that while our planned ITT non-inferiority endpoint was met according to the previoulsy published trial design (Spaulding et al AHJ 2023; 258: 77-84), this is tempered but not negated by not meeting a sensitivity PP non-inferiority endpoint. The issue was indeed made abundantly clear during our presentation. We beg to disagree, however, that the per protocol (PP) and Intention-to-Treat (ITT) are always of equal importance in each and every non-inferiority trial.

Our trial is a strategy trial (not a device trial) and the likelihood of protocol deviations clearly increased in step with procedure complexity. The per-protocol analysis thus mostly excluded the more complex procedures. i.e. those associated with higher event rates and also those who happen to benefit most from a SEB-based strategy.

Of note, our most important result will by the planed 5 year ITT evaluation of the same TVF endpoint, with a conditional superiority analysis if non-inferiority is met. This is another major reason for choosing ITT for the primary analysis on the same population at one year. Regarding your grandfather's wheels allow us to quote Henry Ford: “If I had asked the public what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.“

Moscow is helping Iran target U.S. forces — The Washington Post

According to the newspaper, Russia is sharing intelligence with Tehran on the locations of American military ships and aircraft in the Middle East.

Sources say the transfer of information began on the day the war between the U.S., Israel and Iran started and is helping Iran more accurately target U.S. bases and forces in the region.

This could be the first confirmation of Russia’s indirect involvement in the current conflict.
