THE late tycoon Wicknell Chivayo said on September 27 - three days before he died in a helicopter crash - that he had spent US$100 million and brought 3000 cars for donations to individuals, groups and organisations, including
influential members of society.
The controversial businessman car confetti and cash handouts sparked huge interest and uproar in Zimbabwe and across the region, with people asking whose money was being used to fund those donations.
It is well-documented that Chivayo made his money from political influence peddling, state tenders and contracts, including the US$172 million Zesa energy and US$100 million Zimbabwe Electoral Commission deals.
He started making money from tenders through the unfinished Gwanda Solar project for which he was paid US$5 million, but did not deliver.
His brother Joachim Chivayo told mourners last week that the late cash king spent US$90 000 of that money from public funds on exclusive sneakers and designer clothes in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
Chivayo released the US$100 million and 3000 cars figures, which are difficult to verify, a day after a pristine white Toyota Land Cruiser 300 ZX β gifted to the late African Apostolic Church leader Apostle Paul Mwazha βwas involved in a fatal head-on collision.
The vehicle, driven by church representatives with Mwazhaβs son, Ngoni Mwazha, as a passenger, collided with a cattle-drawn scotch cart near Featherstone along the Harare-Masvingo highway.
The crash killed the cart driver instantly.
Public reaction was immediate, with critics and social media activists scrutinising Chivayoβs relentless and ostentatious car handouts.
Refusing to back down, the flamboyant Chivayo fired back, slamming critics as "prophets of doom".
He firmly defended his donations, which he termed "philanthropy", saying he had donated over US$100 million and 3 000 cars to various causes.
Critics say those were bribes for political purposes, not charity.
Chivayo said it was unfair to obsess over a single accident given the unprecedented scale of his charity work.
Chivayo posted:
"Just one vehicle I bought for Apostle Paul Mwazha was unfortunately involved in an accident yesterday, and suddenly the prophets of doom are everywhere with ridiculous theories and celebrations.
After one person has broken the record in history on charity work in Zimbabwe and bought and donated over way over 100 million USD and 3,000 vehicles, when just ONE is involved in an accident, some people celebrate as though it proves something. What a shame.
Poverty of the mind is far more dangerous than poverty of the pocket."
Chivayo vowed that "i will never stop" donating cars and cash to people.
However, in a final act of dramatic irony, just days after the defiance, Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke, personal assistant and two pilots, tragically died in a helicopter crash in Marondera, Mashonaland East.
Chivayo justified his donations based on a Johane Masowe apostolic sect 1930s prophecy and spiritual mandate that he claimed.
According to Chivayo, it was foretold at his childhood church, Johanne Masowe eChishanu, that he would grow immensely wealthy and distribute cars to people like confetti.
Starting prominently around late 2023 and peaking throughout 2024β2026, Chivayo made good on that narrative.
He became a social media sensation, almost daily posting pictures of brand-new Mercedes-Benzes, Toyota Fortuners, and Toyota Aquas decorated with festive balloons. He targeted a cross-section of Zimbabwean society: prominent people, influential musicians, major religious figures, sports clubs and legends, and strategic political actors.
He tied his handouts to President Emmerson Mnangagwa's obscure political philosophy, framing his wealth as an active investment in "national empowerment".
Chivayo - flashy and noisy as ever - did not hide from the recipients where the cars and cash were coming: "Ndezvemusangano, zvirikubva kuZanu PF" (It's coming Zanu PF), he once said.
Conflict Resolution and Management is not only limited to the secular . The Church too needs it from time to time especially if it is not doctrinal but personal. I envisioned Religious Tourism for Zimbabwe and during my time we stepped in from time to time to keep brothers rivalries from turning nasty and spilling into the public domain and remain focused on saving souls . A bit of cultural diplomacy needed at this stage .

You can never be half of that she is. She did military training for 2 years at Zimbabwe Military Academy.
Do you know wafa wafa? Do you know assault course? Do you deep freezing? Do you know endurance walk? Do you know map reading and night navigation? Can you lead a platoon of soldiers? Before I even talk about her academic work.
Chivayo is dead. Look for a job.
We sincerely appreciate H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan for making time from her demanding national schedule to personally come to Harare and stand with the Chivayo family. This gesture of solidarity reflects the enduring friendship between Zimbabwe and Tanzania. πΏπΌπ€πΉπΏ
