I've spent the last week working on our new data model and we've just hit a 76% speed improvement. Most analytics companies start sampling data and hiding your data from queries. That's lazy. We've now proven that you can have fast dashboards even with over one billion pageviews.

[Jack Ellis @JackEllis]

This is Fathom headquarters right now as we enter hour 22 of upgrading our data model for our new feature launch. The speed improvement in the chart is real.

Busy September! Published a few small changes we've made but we've got a wild data related launch, never seen before in a simple analytics product, coming soon too. So much new stuff is landing over the next few months so watch this space.

We probably don't talk about this enough, but we offer unlimited data retention on ALL our plans (for as long as you're a customer).

It's surprisingly rare for web analytics tools to offer this. What use is analytics if you can't compare with the past?

Looking to connect with people who are looking for privacy-first website analytics.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT US! This Fathom was founded 2 years after us, with the same name, and it's VC backed with $30 million dollars in funding. I hope the acquisition works out well for their team but I want to reiterate that Fathom (my company) is not for sale and never will be.

[Fathom Analytics @usefathom]

@shanegriffiths For what it's worth, we are doing this internally for now ;)

Did you know you can use regex when filtering your Fathom dashboard?

It's especially handy when you want to group a few different values together. For example, if there's been a mix up of campaign names across multiple sources and you've ended up with a few different UTM names:

summer_sale
su26
summer-sale-26

Just click the filter icon in the top right of your dashboard, choose UTM Campaign and select "Matching (regex)", and enter your regex. For our example, it would be:

spring_sale|su26|spring-sale-26

That'll show you the data for all three at once.

You can use regex to filter other data on the dashboard too, like pages, referrers and events.

And if regex is foreign to you, give an AI assistant the values you want to filter by and ask it to generate the bit that looks like your cat has just run across your keyboard 😸

We've made managing currencies for your events much easier!

You can now set currencies straight from your dashboard: a site default, per event, or a wildcard like "Purchase: *".

We've also moved event blocking into the Firewall, where you can now Block or Allow junk events (with wildcard support too).

Our Firewall is now more powerful 🔒

You can now switch any Firewall list to Allow or Block. Want data from only one country? Use an allow list instead of blocking everything else.

Works for countries, domains, IPs, pages and referrers.

I just migrated 6.5 billion rows from MongoDB to Fathom. My head still hurts.

We started Fathom in 2019 with one designer, one developer (me), and a bucket full of excitement. Seven years later, it's a multi-million dollar business. We didn't just build analytics software, we built a reliable brand that thousands now trust. My advice: move the needle.

[Jack Ellis @JackEllis]

I’ve spent nearly seven years documenting how we built Fathom: outages, DDoS attacks, migrations, $100k AWS savings, my cofounder’s retirement, and a divorce. I write transparently because I want other people to learn from my mistakes. These 18 posts tell the story:

[Jack Ellis @JackEllis]

We just migrated over 65 billion database rows and it was the hardest project I've ever done.

New pricing page just launched. It's wild that big analytics companies don't offer lifetime data retention. My guess is that their data models are rushed and sloppy. We have customers with data back to 2005 and our data model is built to scale infinitely. Built by one developer.

[Fathom Analytics @usefathom]

Partners! The shared dashboard banner is back. Previously, it was all or nothing, now it's fully configurable. People have made lots of money from their shared dashboards and we've excited to bring it back. Lots more coming soon, watch out.

[Jack Ellis @JackEllis]

The momentum is back at Fathom. Growth is up, I'm back on support listening to customers, Ash is moving into Fathom's first growth role, I'm dropping my long awaited blog post next week, migrating ~6 billion rows from Gauges into Fathom and shipping funnels & journeys this month.

[Fathom Analytics @usefathom]

The internet is completely changing. Bot traffic to many of our customers, which we block from their data, is exceeding human traffic. We're deploying more bot protection this week (which will be epic) but it's clear that there's useful data in this bot traffic. Watch this space.

[Jack Ellis @JackEllis]

Really stoked on this new update. We added 10,000 lines of code (yes really) and everything is better across the board. The keyword bit is epic. Not having to reconcile thousands of $3.50 transactions each month will be incredible for us too. More to come.
