Zangetsu reveals that Ichigo's soul was never ordinary.

His "Old Man Zangetsu" wasn't actually his Zanpakutō spirit it was the manifestation of his Quincy powers taking the form of Yhwach from 1,000 years ago. The white "Hollow Ichigo" was the true Zanpakuto spirit, born from the fusion of his Soul Reaper and Hollow powers through his mother.

When oetsu Nimaiya reforged Zangetsu, Ichigo finally accepted both sides instead of rejecting one. That's why he ends up wielding two blades: one representing his Quincy power and the other his Hollow/Shinigami power.

So Zangetsu's biggest revelation isn't just that Ichigo is part Quincy, part Hollow, and part Soul Reaper it's that his greatest strength comes from accepting every part of who he is.

Basically What Kubo means is most Zanpakuto exist as a paired set , a blade (the sword) and a scabbard/sheath that contains or regulates its power. Zangetsu (and Sayafushi) were exceptions because they lacked a traditional scabbard. When Oetsu reforged Zangetsu into two separate blades, that dual-wield configuration actually became the correct shape of the Zanpakuto: one blade functions as the true cutting “sword,” while the other acts as the “scabbard”.

During the final fight, when Yhwach crushes Ichigo’s Bankai, he is literally shattering that scabbard aspect. This releases the unconstrained “True Zangetsu” (the pure blade). Because the broken scabbard was absorbed into Ichigo’s body, he now carries that potential inside him meaning he can split his power back into the two-sword (sword + scabbard) state whenever he wants. Whether he actually does so is entirely up to Ichigo’s will and choice.

This is why we later see him wielding a single blade again in the Hell arc one-shot: he simply chose not to externalize the scabbard form.
