I have to admit, I always wondered what this part of Psalm 23 meant. I thought “He anoints my head with oil” was figurative language for God keeping the Psalmist healthy. I never knew this parallel.

Anoint my head with oil

The rod Pastor Adeboye was holding in that video was given to him by his predecessor, Rev. Josiah Akindayomi, the founder of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

At the 2017 convention, Daddy Adeboye recounted that God instructed the founder to prepare a wooden staff, bless it, and hand it to his successor for use in prayer and miracles. The rod staff was given to him years before Rev Akindayomi died.

I remember that night at the convention in 2017, Adeboye brought the staff out for the first time and used it for three special prayers. After that he raised it again and blessed the handkerchiefs the congregation was waving, amid shouts of “Halleluyah.”

According to the account he gave that night, the staff came through the founder by divine instruction, was kept for years, and was meant to be used only occasionally rather than as a regular object.
