Misunderstandings of AI head in every possible direction:

“It's just math.” That's like saying we are just matter. Technically, see the Church-Turing-Deutsch principle.

“It’s AGI.” Only if we’ve reached the end of fundamentally new problems.

“It’s creative / not creative.” It’s not creative since all the outputs are already in the weights. It is creative because the weights include the creative ideas of the people who made it.

“It's just prediction.” Many algorithms can emerge from the atomic process of predicting tokens.

“It will solve math.” Math is not a game you can win. Humans can invent new math outside the algorithmic scope of the models.

“It understands / doesn’t understand.” It has no understanding because it cannot conjecture responses to criticisms. It can mimic understanding within its algorithmic scope.

“We’re on the path to AGI.” AGI will be alive, will have its own interests, and may not even be able to add 2+2.
