Parliamentary voting on the controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB 3), which seeks, among other things, to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office, has concluded.

Zimbabwe’s National Assembly has voted 216-42 in favour of the bill. While ZANUPF did not, on its own, possess the two-thirds majority required to pass a constitutional amendment, the support of 35 captured opposition MPs enabled the ruling party to secure the necessary threshold.

The bill now proceeds to the Senate, where ZANUPF also does not independently command the required numbers. However, there are expectations that support from opposition senators aligned with the ruling party could once again provide the numbers needed for its passage.

If approved by the Senate, the bill will move a step closer to becoming law, marking one of the most consequential constitutional changes in Zimbabwe’s recent history.
