TRAVEL TIP: Get ready to bargain! Price is negotiable on all items sold at Ghanian markets. A good rule of thumb is to offer half of the original price that the seller is asking for. Don't be afraid to walk away if you are not comfortable with the price!

The significance of Krobo glass beads goes beyond their beauty. For many years, beads were used as a form of currency between European merchants and African people. Beads are used today in Ghana to commemorate birth, coming of age, marriage, or even death.

TRAVEL TIP: Did you know there are over 80 languages spoken in Ghana? English is Ghana’s official language making communication easy for our student groups, but Ghana still retains a rich heritage of linguistic diversity and is considered a multilingual country. ✈️

Krobo beads come in many colors and shapes, often bearing symbolic meanings. Blue, for example, symbolizes purity, white symbolizes fertility, gold symbolizes wealth, and yellow diamond-shaped beads with dark designs are worn by African chiefs.
