News Release:
Attorney Kathryn Nester Appointed in Tyler Robinson Case
Provo (September 24, 2025) This afternoon, the Utah County Commission unanimously approved a contract to appoint legal counsel for Tyler James Robinson, as required under Utah law and after the court determined he couldn’t afford private counsel. This action fulfills the Commission’s constitutional responsibility to ensure that individuals accused of a crime—who cannot afford legal representation—are provided with a qualified defense.
In reaching this agreement, the Commission relied on the advice of an independent criminal defense attorney, whom it has retained to advise the Commission in these situations.
The contract names Kathryn Nester as counsel for Mr. Robinson. Moving forward, all inquiries related to Mr. Robinson’s legal representation should be directed to Nester-Lewis, Attorneys at Law at [email protected].
Today, Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced formal charges against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with last week’s fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Gray confirmed that Robinson is being charged with aggravated murder and stated that the county will pursue the death penalty, calling the incident “an American tragedy.”

"As Utah County Commissioners and citizens, we are profoundly relieved by the arrest of Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk. This development brings a measure of reassurance to a community shaken by violence.
We are deeply grateful for the tireless and coordinated efforts of local law enforcement agencies, including the leadership of Sheriff Mike Smith and his deputies. We are also thankful for the support of state and federal partners whose resources and expertise played a key role in this investigation. Their dedication and the around-the-clock work of many professionals resulted in this critical breakthrough.
We stand united in our unwavering conviction that political violence has no place in our society. A vigorous and decisive prosecution is essential—not only to deliver justice, but to send an unequivocal message: such acts will never be tolerated.
This shooting has cast a dark shadow over Utah County, the State of Utah, and our nation. But in the face of this darkness, we remain steadfast in our commitment to justice, unity, and the rule of law."
