(1/11) On April 29th, we had an exciting quarterly virtual Utah Seismic Safety Commission meeting with our commissioners, staff, and guests. Here's a thread of what we discussed:
Registrations are open for the free QuakeSmart Preparedness Workshop on Wednesday, October 4, in Salt Lake City, UT! See the link below for more information:

After a great introduction by @SpencerJCox, the opening session of #12NCEE gets underway with a dynamic panel discussing Utah’s earthquake hazard and mitigation.
Thanks to the students at the @UTschoolsDB for sharing their #ShakeOut drill with us. Great job practicing Drop, Cover, and Hold On for earthquakes. And they were having fun while they were learning. You, too, can still register and hold a drill anytime. https://t.co/N1BkYADCq2
The Great Utah Shakeout is tomorrow. For more information on earthquakes in Utah, explore https://t.co/4juHN2cKCL to find data and maps of Utah’s recent earthquakes, learn about the geology of Utah earthquakes, make preparations for the next earthquake, and more.

1/7 #Prepare to learn about earthquake: What do you do when the shaking stops? Stay in your DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON position until the shaking stops. Check yourself for injuries. Treat possible wounds. Learn more from @UtahShakeOut: https://t.co/alRVngB51h
(1/3) Our next USSC meeting is this Thursday, April 14 from 9a-12p MST. Presenters include @envision_utah youth group, @USGS_Quakes with a presentaiton about the Haywired Scenario and an update on the 2023 National Seismic Hazard Map...connection info in thread.

(2/3)...@EERI_tweets on the Nat. Conference on Earthquake Engineering (NCEE) happening in SLC this summer, #UTleg updates, and general announcements. This is a virtual meeting and anyone is welcome to join!
#utleg providing funding to investigate schools that are at risk of damage during earthquakes. Schools ID'd by recent @femaregion8 and @UtahEmergency report linked in article.
The Utah State Legislature has approved a bill that will direct $171 million in one-time funding to help Utah schools upgrade multiple buildings across the state.

FEMA and the Utah DEM released an inventory of unreinforced masonry (URM) school buildings in the state. The inventory identifies URM buildings of all types, which are at greater risk of damage in an earthquake compared to modern building construction. https://t.co/pZwClCvRTd
Check out UT Seismic Safety Commission (USSC) on @envision_utah "Your Utah, Your Future" podcast. They discuss the science of earthquakes on the Wasatch Front and how. This is just part 1 on disaster resilience in Utah. #utleg#utah#earthquake https://t.co/jaTmb9VxY2
The Utah Seismic Safety Commission (USSC) calls on state policymakers to implement five actions to improve Utah’s resilience to a major earthquake. Learn what these five actions are, and download the report. https://t.co/oMB5uprQcI

Join us tomorrow for another FREE Quick Quake Briefing webinar with the EERI Northern California chapter—focusing on this summer's Antelope Valley M 6.0 earthquake! Speakers from USGS, CGS, Caltrans, and more. Register here: https://t.co/MdYVZ825CV
#HistoricalEarthquake: Sept. 29 M ±6 in Elsinore, UT, w/ 2 significant aftershocks. Mainshock later refined to M 5.45 & aftershocks M 4.42 & 4.67 (Arabasz et al., 2016).
No deaths, but nearly every building in the city was damaged. Several injuries were caused by falling bricks.
Fascinating article on recent research on why (or why not) New Zealanders seismically retrofit their homes after the nation experienced a major earthquake (2016 M7.8 Kaikoura). Begs the question of how UT is feeling after the '20 Magna wake-up call. #earthquake#Utah#utleg
Do big earthquakes spur individuals to retrofit their homes against future shaking? Not always. Check out @davitiaa’s story for @temblor about new research that aims to find out why. https://t.co/AFw1SomLDx
