🚨 Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool fans reception for Manchester City ahead of their clash at Anfield:
“I saw the pictures from outside Anfield. The banners, the shirts, the singing. Somebody sent me a message saying, ‘Jürgen, have you seen what the Liverpool supporters are doing?’
I said, ‘Yes. They appear to have remembered who is coming to visit.’
Then he told me City had taken a different route to the stadium.
I said, ‘Ah, very clever. Unfortunately, the match is still at Anfield.’
Listen, I know these supporters. When they feel something is unfair, they don’t simply forget it because another season has started.
I remember 2019. 97 points. We lost one league game all season and finished second.
I remember 2022. 92 points. Again, second by one point.
People sometimes speak about those seasons like they’re numbers on a piece of paper. But I remember the dressing room. I remember the boys sitting there after giving absolutely everything. I remember looking at them and trying to find the right words.
What do you tell a team that has done almost everything right and still finished one point short?
You tell them to go again. And they did.
So when the supporters see the news about City’s financial case, of course they have feelings about it. A commission has made its findings, City are appealing, and the process must take its course. But you cannot expect Liverpool fans to pretend those years meant nothing to them.
Somebody asked me, ‘Would you tell the supporters to calm down?’
I said, ‘About what? Singing?’
‘They’re calling City cheats.’
‘Well, I don’t think they came all this way to sing Happy Birthday.’
But I would tell them something else. Make Anfield impossible to play in, not impossible to arrive at. Sing for ninety minutes. Let the players feel you behind them. That is where Liverpool supporters are at their best.
And the players have a responsibility too.
Because you can put a thousand banners outside the stadium, but somebody still has to win the second ball. Somebody still has to press. Somebody still has to put the ball in the net.
City have started the season winning every league match. Fine. They are a very good football team, and pretending otherwise won’t help Liverpool beat them.
But if I were in that Liverpool dressing room, I’d say, ‘Look outside. These people have been waiting for this afternoon. Don’t let them do all the work.’
I can imagine one of the players asking, ‘Boss, should we be thinking about the charges?’
I’d say, ‘No. Think about the first tackle. Think about the next pass. The supporters have already prepared the songs. You prepare the football.’
That is how you make a statement. Not by winning an argument on the internet. By giving a team that hasn’t lost in the league this season its first defeat, in front of people who have spent years waiting to celebrate this fixture for reasons beyond three points.
And if Liverpool win, I know what will happen. Somebody will send me a video of the Kop singing, and I’ll watch it about 15 times.
Then somebody will ask whether it was the loudest Anfield has ever been.
I will say, ‘I don’t know. I wasn’t there with a measuring device.’
But I know one thing. City can choose a different road to the stadium.
They cannot choose a different crowd once they get inside.”
Me, as an Everton fan, backing Liverpool vs Manchester City, the cheating bastards on Sunday
No matter who I support, I just can’t get behind cheats, I don’t want Manchester City to win
It’s the Premier League against Manchester City
The integrity of the PL is on the line here
🚨 Jürgen Klopp on Man City verdict: “I'm far from preparing for a title or anything like that”.
“I'm absolutely fine with what we've achieved in Liverpool”.
“We fought hard on the pitch. I can't say more about that because I don't know the details”.
