False propaganda against India’s ethanol blending programme is doing the rounds again, but the facts are clear and documented.

The actual experimental ethanol blending programme started in 2001. It was formally announced in 2004. By 2006, E5 (5% ethanol blending) was already being rolled out across multiple states.

In January 2013, the Government made it official through a Gazette of India notification issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

That order explicitly directed Oil Marketing Companies to sell ethanol-blended petrol and achieve 5% blending across the country as a whole.

This is not at all sudden or a recent imposition. It is a 20+ year old policy announced under UPA

The current government has expanded the programme with higher blending targets to further reduce India’s energy dependence, a prudent and forward-looking strategic move, especially in today’s times of global uncertainty, geopolitical conflicts, and sudden energy crises.

The lies being spread today deliberately ignore this long, transparent track record. India’s ethanol programme has deep roots and clear national purpose.

We had nauseating, disgusting levels of corruption in Tamil Nadu under the DMK. This is known to the entire Universe, not some grand secret.

It reached such Himalayan heights, their own Finance Minister, someone not corrupt who was caught up with the corrupt crowd, was complaining about it (sadly for him his remarks became public and he was demoted to became the IT Minister).

This is not about ideology.
Even the Marxists of Kerala, then allied with the DMK, would say how deeply corrupt the DMK was.

I have always appreciated people like Shri Balagopal, the former Finance Minister of Kerala, for his devoted public service. I am sure he and I will not agree on political philosophy or ideology but I deeply respect him.

If the DMK truly wants to introspect, they must start with their corruption.
