The Virginia Geological Research Symposium earlier this month was a success! Participants enjoyed insightful presentations and posters on topics like biostratigraphy, stratigraphic correlation, geophysics, critical minerals, and more.
From ground to grid, VA’s natural resources shape how we live, work, and grow. This #EarthWeek, @VAStateParks are hosting events across VA highlighting the conservation and stewardship of these resources. Explore events near you: https://t.co/jftCSlIJIJ
Virginia Geological Research Symposium is May 1st, 2026– Registration is Now Open

We are developing the agenda and will send the agenda and additional details to registrants by April 3.
Happy International Women's Day! We're so proud of the incredible women who have dedicated themselves to advancing the field of geologic sciences. Your effort and encouragement are greatly appreciated and inspiring! #InternationalWomensDay#WomensHistoryMonth#WomenInSTEM
Announcing the annual Virginia Geological Research Symposium in Charlottesville on Friday, May 1st! We anticipate a day of diverse presentations, posters, & discussions. Agenda & link to online registration here by March 13: https://t.co/vAJChh6Tsj
Happy #OldRockDay! Did you know that Virginia's oldest common fossil, Skolithos linearis, are approximately 540 million years old? These trace fossils are vertical worm burrows left behind in the beach sand along ancient North America's coast.
A method to better understand the geomechanics of the earth is determining a rock's hardness. @virginia_energy contract worker Catharine DeGolyer uses a rebound hardness tester on a diabase sample for the DOE-FECM project, expanding the database of mafic and ultramafic rock.
Happy #EarthScienceWeek! Today is International Archaeology Day! The scientific fields of geology and archaeology overlap, especially related to the use of earth materials in the production of tools. Learn more here: https://t.co/hRcXbntIaE
Happy #EarthScienceWeek! Today is Geologic Map Day! Explore Virginia’s geology, geohazards, and mineral resources through our free geologic publications: https://t.co/Girp80uM0l
Happy #EarthScienceWeek! Today is Geoscience for Everyone Day! The women of @virginia_energy serve the Commonwealth by making geologic observations in the field and performing technical analyses in the office. These critical findings contribute to the field of geologic studies.
We're halfway through #EarthScienceWeek! Learn about the natural world around you by watching a free science webinar (https://t.co/JLexPAIt8Z) or entering an art contest (https://t.co/quvK7AuWzY)!
Happy #EarthScienceWeek! Today is National Fossil Day! Part of VA’s rich geologic history is preserved in fossils. For example, plant fossils like ferns teach us about earth's past terrestrial environment. Learn more about National Fossil Day here: https://t.co/KjnpOB5SiQ
Happy #EarthScienceWeek! Today is Earth Observation Day! Geologists use images from aerial geophysical surveys to help them identify rocks and important mineral resources on the ground and subsurface. Learn more here: https://t.co/dfYo0mhFlZ
Happy #EarthScienceWeek! Today is Minerals Day! Minerals contain elements that are essential to the creation of items like vehicle batteries and computers. Learn more about minerals here: https://t.co/EzbKft3s9E
Happy #EarthScienceWeek! Have you ever EarthCached? Now is a perfect opportunity to go on an outdoor treasure hunt at our Charlottesville office to learn more about Earth Science around you. Learn more here: https://t.co/yckWllUsmq
This week is #EarthScienceWeek! This year we are celebrating "Energy Resources for Our Future". Visit the @AGI_Updates website to learn more about the educational toolkits, art contests, and free webinars available this week: https://t.co/4rgYgHrZmS
Airborne geophysical surveys are occurring across VA. Aircraft will measure magnetic field variations and natural radiation from rocks beneath vegetation. This data will aid in developing geologic maps, and evaluating natural resources and hazards. https://t.co/qK5eFFFOVF
Late summer is peak map review season for @virginia_energy geologists! Jennie Latane, Hollie Barbour, and Katie Lang have been discussing the bedrock and surficial of the Charlottesville 1:100,000-scale compilation map, which has been in progress for over two years.
Staff from GMR attended a Weather & Landslides Workshop at UNC-Asheville to discuss landslide triggers and actions to build resilient communities. A visit to a Garren Creek debris flow with @USGS & @KGSNews gave insight about landslides caused by Hurricane Helene near 1 year ago.
