Today in 1959-“Mercury 7” begin training at NASA Langley. Soviets shocked the world with Sputnik in '57. Yuri Gagarin became 1st man in space in '61, though Mercury's John Glenn orbited 3 times in '62. The space race continued as the 2 superpowers competed to land on the moon.
