Reclaiming Our Nation’s Dignity: A Call to Conscience
Today in Abuja, I addressed the Nigerian Guild of Editors on the theme “Reclaiming Our Nation’s Dignity.” I thanked them for their vital role as shapers of national conscience and reminded them that Nigeria stands at a moral and developmental crossroads. The responsibility before us is immense—to speak truth, guide reflection, and inspire hope for a better nation.
I told them that Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads. Recently, President Trump called our country a “now disgraced country,” citing the killings. He only echoed what many Nigerians of conscience have long observed. The debate, therefore, should not be about genocide, but about whether killings are happening at all—from terrorists, kidnappers, and other violent groups—and why they persist with impunity and what should be done to stop it.
I reminded them that our disgrace as a nation does not come from what others say, but from what we have allowed—killings, impunity, corruption, hunger, and the neglect of our people. Today, over 130 million Nigerians live in poverty, and more than 20 million children are out of school. These are the real issues that should trouble our collective conscience.
I told them that true redemption will not come from excuses but from truth, sacrifice, and leadership by example. Nigeria can rise again if we rebuild our moral foundation, invest in education and health, and make public service about the people, not privilege. It is through these values that national dignity can be restored.
I reminded them that editors are not just recorders of history—they are the conscience of the nation. Their work in shaping truth, correcting distortions, and holding leaders accountable is essential to rebuilding trust and dignity in our society.
Finally, I told them that if we govern with transparency, accountability, and compassion, Nigeria will no longer be called a disgraced nation but one of dignity—a people who, though they stumble, always strive to stand upright. Together, we can and must reclaim our nation’s honour.
A New Nigeria is POssible - PO
Today, we pause as a movement to lift our beloved country before God - with gratitude, repentance, and renewed hope.
As our leader and Strategic Moral Compass, @PeterObi, reminded us during his recent pilgrimage to Rome:
“Faith does not absolve us of responsibility; rather, it calls us to action. As Nigerians, we must each continue to do our part - with honesty, diligence, and love - for the healing and progress of our country.”
We could not agree more. At Vision Better Delta, we believe prayer must move us to purpose. While we thank God for sustaining us as one nation despite decades of failure, we must also repent of our collective wrongs - corruption, injustice, waste - and rise to build a new future grounded in:
🤝🏽 Righteousness – leadership defined by integrity and justice.
🌍 Harmony – a state where diversity becomes our greatest strength.
💼 Prosperity – an economy that creates jobs, dignity, and shared growth.
📖 “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray… then I will hear from heaven and heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14
🙏🏽 As we pray for mercy and for leaders with compassion, competence, and character, let us also commit ourselves to the work of renewal - in our homes, our communities, and our state.
A better Delta- and a greater Nigeria - is still POssible.

My Visit to the USA, Rome: Taking Nigeria's Situation to God.
After my 2-day trip to the United States - where I addressed the Friendship Club on Saturday, 4 October, and spoke at the 1st Ubuntu African Youth Assembly in Washington on Sunday, 5 October - I departed that same night for Rome, arriving on 6th October to join my dearest wife, who was already in Rome waiting for me.
This year marks a Jubilee Year, an event celebrated every twenty-five years, and my dearest wife and I chose to dedicate our prayers to Nigeria. With hearts full of gratitude, we thanked God that, despite our differences and the many challenges faced over sixty-five years of independence, He has kept us together as one nation - a rare and profound blessing for which we remain deeply thankful.
We also sought forgiveness for our national transgressions and implored God to intervene in the suffering of the Nigerian people. We prayed for the injection into our political landscape selfless and compassionate leaders whose hearts He God would touch—leaders who would be truthful in word and deed, altruistic in service, and committed to using public resources for the common good. Leaders whose decisions would reflect competence, capacity, character, and commitment to the welfare of all. Leaders who understand that they were not created to live in isolation but in community with others, and must ensure that actions are for the benefit of the community.
On Tuesday, the 7th of October, as part of our pilgrimage, we passed through three Holy Doors of the four major Papal Basilicas in Rome, praying at each that God would open the door of His mercy to Nigeria. At St. Mary Major, we prayed, passed through the Holy Door, and reflected at the grave of the late Pope Francis. From there, we journeyed to the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, where Cardinal James Harvey warmly received us, led us through the Holy Door, and shared the basilica’s rich history and the deep significance of the Jubilee Year. Our third stop was the Papal Basilica of St. John Lateran, dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, where, together with other pilgrims, we passed through the Holy Door and joined in prayer. We then proceeded to the Scala Sancta - the Holy Steps which Jesus ascended before Pontius Pilate - where we prayed with profound reverence, completing a day of deep spiritual reflection at some of Rome’s most sacred sites.
On Wednesday the 8th of October, we rose early for the Papal General Audience at St. Peter’s Basilica, where we were blessed to hear the Catechesis of His Holiness on hope, perseverance, and steadfast faith in times of hardship. Afterwards, we passed through the final Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica, praying and reflecting deeply on God’s mercy, thus completing our pilgrimage through the four doors with hearts filled with gratitude and renewed faith.
At St. Peter’s, we were privileged to be received in audience by His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex, to whom we humbly appealed for prayers for our beloved country, Nigeria.
Along the way, we met several Nigerian pilgrims: men and women of faith whose faces shone with quiet hope. Together, we renewed our trust in God’s divine mercy and in the promise of a renewed and better Nigeria.
I believe fervently in the power and providence of God. Yet, as we lift our nation before Him in prayer, we must not surrender to fatalism. Faith does not absolve us of responsibility; rather, it calls us to action. As Nigerians, we must each continue to do our part - with honesty, diligence, and love - for the healing and progress of our country.
A new Nigeria is POssible. -PO
Yesterday, our ILV @KKenPela had the privilege of being by our leader & Strategic Moral Compass, HE @PeterObi, as he delivered a moving Independence Day message. 🇳🇬
He spoke truth to power: waste, corruption & reckless borrowing have deepened poverty & crippled our economy. Only responsible, productive leadership can restore Nigeria’s promise.
This is the heart of the Prosperity Pillar of the Vision Better Delta Roadmap we’ve been unpacking:
➡️ reckless borrowing ➝ productive infrastructure
➡️ waste ➝ wealth creation
➡️ joblessness ➝ jobs with dignity
A Better Delta and a Great Nigeria is still PO-ssible.

A Great Nigeria is Still Possible
Statement by Mr. Peter Obi, Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Presidential Election, on the Occasion of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, 1 October 2025
Fellow Nigerians,
Today should be a day of joy and remembrance, a day to celebrate the struggles of our heroes who fought to free Nigeria from colonial rule. It should be a day for gratitude to Almighty God for His blessings on our nation.
On 1 October 1960, Nigeria gained independence to global acclaim as an emerging African economic and political power. Such was our potential that Time Magazine predicted the rise of a true African superpower that would lead the continent with pride. Our founding fathers fought for independence with confidence, passion, and determination to build a prosperous Nigeria that would stand alongside the world’s most advanced nations.
Unfortunately, tragic failures of leadership derailed this vision. Yet despite these setbacks, Nigeria has always shown resilience. In 1999, we overcame military dictatorship and restored democracy, beginning a renewed journey toward prosperity, freedom, and justice. That journey helped us build Africa’s largest economy and strengthen democratic institutions. But over the last decade, under the APC’s incompetent, divisive, and corrupt leadership, Nigeria has been greatly diminished.
By the end of 2007, our total debt was about N2.5 trillion, only 10 percent of GDP, after President Obasanjo’s government secured debt forgiveness of over 30 billion dollars. By 2014, Nigeria had become Africa’s largest economy and was primed to achieve middle-income status. In 2015, for the first time, a ruling party was defeated in a presidential election, marking another milestone for our democracy.
Today, the picture is bleak. Our total debt stands at about N175 trillion, nearly 50 percent of GDP, without any improvement in productive sectors. Nigeria has fallen to the fourth-largest economy in Africa, behind South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria. Our democracy is now described as “undemocratic.” In just one year, this administration pushed over 15 million Nigerians into acute poverty. Today, more than 150 million Nigerians lack access to basic healthcare, education, water, and sanitation. This number grows daily under an APC government that pursues brutal revenue-driven policies while ignoring the welfare of its people. Nigeria now ranks among the lowest in the world on human development indicators.
This government taxes struggling citizens and small businesses heavily, while indulging in extravagance. Billions are spent on new presidential jets, yachts, and luxury cars that cost more than the entire 2024 budget for primary healthcare. The Vice President’s residence was renovated at a cost of N25 billion, more than the combined capital budgets of six major federal university teaching hospitals. Over N10 billion was allocated for car parks and canteens for the National Assembly, more than the capital budget of the Ministry of Science and Technology at a time when science is crucial to national growth.
Meanwhile, Nigerians pay more for everything and receive less. Passports, permits, electricity, petrol, food, rent, and healthcare all cost more. Yet power supply remains unreliable, food insecurity deepens, and UNICEF and WFP project that 33 million Nigerians will face acute hunger in 2025.
This government borrows recklessly, not for investment in productive infrastructure but for wasteful consumption. Insecurity has further crippled our economy. Nigerians now live in fear of travelling by road. Kidnapping has become rampant, with billions paid in ransom. Incompetence in security management has turned our country into one of the most terrorised and unsafe nations in the world. Cronyism, corruption, and disregard for the rule of law have scared away investors, while other African nations overtake us as preferred investment destinations.
True freedom is not just raising a flag — it is freedom from corruption, insecurity, and poverty. ✊🏽🇳🇬
On this Independence Day, we pray not just for a Better Delta but for a New Nigeria — free, united, and prosperous for all. 🌱

Without harmony, prosperity cannot stand.
Plank by plank, here’s how we Create Harmony in Delta:
⚖️ Unity & Social Justice
🛡 Peace & Security
🤝 Inclusive Belonging
Harmony is the glue of progress.
#VisionBetterDelta#CreateHarmony
When people feel excluded, bitterness grows.
Plank 3 of Create Harmony is Inclusive Belonging — where women, youth, minorities, and people with disabilities are valued and empowered.
Belonging → Strength → Prosperity.
#VisionBetterDelta#CreateHarmony
When security breaks down, fear takes over.
Plank 2 of Create Harmony is Peace & Security — making every community safe, tackling root causes of violence, and protecting lives and livelihoods.
Peace → Stability → Prosperity.
#VisionBetterDelta#CreateHarmony
Without justice, there can be no unity.
Without unity, peace cannot stand.
Plank 1 of Create Harmony is Unity & Social Justice — reconciliation, healing, and ensuring no community is left behind.
Justice → Unity → Harmony.
#VisionBetterDelta#CreateHarmony
Without unity, there can be no peace.
Without peace, there can be no progress.
To Create Harmony in Delta, we must build on 3 Planks:
⚖️ Unity & Social Justice
🛡 Peace & Security
🤝 Inclusive Belonging
Choose Unity. Defend Peace. Embrace Belonging.
#VisionBetterDelta#KKPSays
For the past few days, we’ve unpacked Righteousness as the first pillar of the Vision Better Delta roadmap.
Fortuitously, our Strategic Moral Compass, HE @PeterObi, whose example and counsel has shaped our roadmap, offered the perfect real-world example in this tweet. In Atlanta, a Mayor with a $3bn budget boards a flight quietly -no sirens, no aides, no noise. In Nigeria, officials with far smaller budgets act like emperors.
That’s the difference Righteousness makes:
⚖️ Rule of Law
🤝 Integrity & Accountability
🔎 Transparency in Governance
🌍 Mass Re-orientation
🏛️ Public Sector Reform
When these values are enthroned → waste is curbed, trust grows, and resources serve the people. The result? Jobs are created, cities generate billions, and communities prosper.
