I am thrilled to share that I won both the Fidelis Okoro Prize for Poetry of The Muse Journal, No. 52 and the GBV Poetry & Spoken Words contest for 16 days of activism, held by @wonderwomannigeria in partnership with the French Embassy @FranceInNigeria.
Grateful for my craft.🤭

Meanwhile, INEC, with a budget of over N355 billion, couldn't implement a simple election without glitches.

do you think they scammed their way there? do you know how many exams they wrote to get there?
I've been named the 2026–2027 Donald E. Waterfall Scholar. I'll recieve a year of mentorship & funding.
I'm grateful to Cara Waterfall & the judges, Isaiah Adepoju (inaugural Scholar) & Zaynab Iliyasu Bobi. Congratulations to Frank Njugi & Chimezie Umeoka, & all on the shortlist
men who don’t harm women aren’t special. Men who don’t cheat aren’t exceptional. Treating women as equals isn’t heroic. Cooking and caring for their own kids isn’t “help,” it’s responsibility. This is the baseline stop applauding men for the bare minimum.
We need to be careful with our framing, teenagers and young girls see these things and absorb faster than we think. Virginity is a moralisation of sex and for what??? Emphasis should be on safe sex and consent. Everything else is bs.
Byeeeee
...we cannot afford to give ammunition to shame women on their choice of sanitary products under purity culture-esq. It's dragging the advocacy back by a thousand steps and again, HELL NO!
PS: Menstrual cup can be used by everyone, sexually active or not.
I also have a personal aversion to them. You do not need to explain the reasons for your aversion to anyone.
However, you cannot parrot the same patriarchal talking points with conviction and refuse to see the dangers in it. Even more importantly, in this age of period poverty
Especially when said choice is driven by patriarchal standards, and this even dangerously reinforces the belief that a woman has complete control over keeping an "intact hymen" whatever tf that even means. Now, it's very valid to not want to try new menstrual products
Moreover, certain medical procedures can also tear the hymen. The idea or obsession with maintaining an intact hymen is therefore very problematic. I've seen choice feminists on the tl talking about choice with wanting the hymen to be intact. We have to investigate "choices"
Also, as you grow older, your hymen will stretch, it will thin out too. If you're a moderately active person who runs, does some form of sport, chances are the hymen would have already torn or significantly stretched out🤷♀️
That's why the concept of "hymen" = virginity is flawed
Now, another thing is that the hymen doesn't 100% "cover" the vagina. In few cases, when that happens, it's called an imperforate hymen and you actually need to go to the hospital because even your menstrual blood will be lodged behind it. Majority of hymen is annula
I'm back. Firstly, I think people have a skewed view of what the hymen is. It's not some rigid blockage or skin over your vagina. It is mucosal tissue, thin mucosal tissue. It's usually just 1.5 to 2mm in thickness, so you can imagine
Guyyyysss! With excitement effing riding me, I'm happy to announce that LEON Literary Review has given me my first ever BEST OF THE NET nomination! My gratitude goes to the editors at @LeonReview for thinking my poem published with them worthy enough for this recognition. I'm so
But what actually is bad in using a tampon or menstrual cup? I'm seeing a lot of people say they don't want to "break their hymen".
What is even so precious in the hymen that you don't want it to break? Hymen that can tear because you were exercising?😭
Some of the words being used to discuss the use of tampons and menstrual cups, have been interesting to read. I mean, I understand that there are genuine concerns as to why it wouldn't be a first option for some women, but some of these takes are deeply rooted in purity culture.
They send you a rejection. Send them a new work. And the rejected work, send it elsewhere. Or sit with it again. Let sending out your work or sitting with it be your mourning.
I had my menstrual cup for almost 6 years. That’s N14,000 for 6 years. Thats a ridiculous savings. Only threw it out cause my whole house had a mold issue and I didn’t want to take risk.
I just bought another from med plus. N12,500 last weekend. Thats another at 6 years. Also no trash, nothing to dispose of. Just pour down the toilet and flush.
I also have significantly less cramps, absolutely zero irritation, can swim, sleep naked and go out for hours without changing on regular days. I have one heavy flow day per period where I have to change once every three to four hours but most days I’m fine for up to 8/10 hours at a time.
Also with practice you learn how to empty your cup without spilling a drop so I can change in public toilets with zero stress.
