Canada’s population is 42 million.

Mark Carney’s government is now sending a groceries and essentials cheque to more than 12 million Canadians.

That’s almost 30% of the population.

Think about that.

In a wealthy, developed country - 1/3 of citizens can’t afford to put food on the table without government assistance.

For reference, the U.S. reported just over 13% of Americans are experiencing food insecurity.

This should concern Canadians since we’ve always prided ourselves on being better than the U.S.

So, it begs the question - after 11 years of the Liberal government, why do so many Canadians need a government cheque just to afford the basics?

Why is Mark Carney telling Canadians his plan is working when it’s clearly not?

Mark Carney has quietly taken control of how Canada is run. Cabinet, Parliament, the civil service and the press have all been pushed aside, and power now sits with the Prime Minister and a small circle of people most Canadians have never heard of.

That's not coming from his critics. It comes from more than a dozen Liberal insiders who spoke to the Toronto Star's Justin Ling this summer.

When Carney took office, he tore up the structure he inherited and rebuilt it as a strict pyramid with himself at the top. He has personally taken over major files instead of trusting his ministers with them. He is effectively his own foreign minister.

Then he built a parallel government. Instead of fixing the public service, Carney created brand new agencies inside the Privy Council Office and handed them to people he picked himself. A banker and personal friend runs defence procurement. An oil and gas executive runs the Major Projects Office. These bodies will have enormous power to approve, buy and build things, with far less of the oversight that normally comes with that power.

The ministers Canadians can actually hold accountable are being left behind. Insiders say the Treasury Board President doesn't seem to understand his own file, and the Immigration Minister has been a disaster. Carney won't shuffle them, because Jean Chrétien reportedly convinced him it isn't worth the trouble.

Parliament is next. Omnibus bills are back, pushing massive legislation through the House with barely any debate.

And he won't explain any of it to you. Carney refuses one-on-one interviews with Canadian media, preferring the New York Times and Bloomberg, and talks to Canadians through his own YouTube videos where nobody gets to ask a follow-up question.

One Liberal put it bluntly: "You can get away with a lot when you've got a 10-point lead."

Canadians didn't vote for a government run by a handful of insiders nobody can name. They deserve one that answers to them.

•Stelco Hamilton Steel Works, Ontario. Indefinitely idling cold-rolled and coated finishing operations starting October 9th Up to 500 employees affected

• Algoma Steel — Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Laid off more than 1,000 workers.

• Canada Metal Processing Group (Ivaco Rolling Mills, Sivaco, Infasco) – L’Orignal, Ont and Quebec plants. Affecting 140 Canadians (including 30+ permanent layoffs at Ivaco)

• Novelis — Kingston, Ontario aluminum plant. Laid off 80 workers (roughly one-third of the site, including 70 hourly staff)

• RYAM (Rayonier Advanced Materials) Témiscaming, Quebec pulp and paperboard mill. Temporary economic shutdown of most operations from 15 September 2026

• Carrier Forest Products — Big River, Saskatchewan sawmill. Indefinite production shutdown

• South Shore Furniture — Plants in Sainte-Croix and Coaticook, Quebec. Ceased operations in spring 2026 after 86 years

• Bestar Inc. — Lac-Mégantic and Sherbrooke, Quebec affecting 175 Canadians.

• GoliathTech – Quebec will close and they had to open a factory in Ohio specifically to bypass U.S. tariffs.

Carney needs to get back to the negotiating table or Canada’s industries and companies will continue to suffer and disappear.
