In Kandahar, young people are learning #SolarEnergySkills through @UNICEFAfg supported vocational training. Enable enrollment assistance, toolkits, transportation & apprenticeships with market-based providers.
We support training that builds skills & opens doors to livelihoods.
Did you know that at #WHA79...
64 countries took the floor
ALL spoke on polio
All were united in their message
All said we must @EndPolioNow
In a 🌍 world marked by conflict, mistrust and geopolitical division, this was an example of humanity with one clear voice.
Countries from every region, every income level and across today's geopolitical divides came back to the same simple commitment. In the year 2026, no child anywhere should be paralysed by polio.
That is the power of polio eradication. It is a purpose that brings people together. From Sabin in the USSR to Sabin Sundays.
It has brought people together...
and it continues to bring countries together around a clear, measurable, moral goal...
✅ reach every child
✅ sustain surveillance and laboratories
✅ respond rapidly to outbreaks
✅ protect mobile populations, refugees, reach every zero-dose child and access all including those in conflict-affected areas
✅ strengthen cross-border coordination
✅ systematically integrate polio assets into routine immunization, PHC and resilient health systems
✅ sustain financing until the job is done
WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Region, the last region with endemic wild polio, was strongly represented with Libya, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Tunisia, Iran, Sudan, Morocco, Pakistan, Egypt, Qatar and UAE all taking the floor and highlighting their unwavering support for the push to end polio.
Partners reinforced the same message.
In global health, fragmentation is easy.
But polio eradication reminds us that when the goal is clear, the purpose is shared, and the child is placed at the centre, unity is possible.
The final mile is hard for a reason. But the world is still capable of walking that last mile together.

A very fruitful meeting with @gatesfoundation senior officials, earlier in the week, on our partnership in #Afghanistan.
@UNICEFAfg appreciate the support on primary healthcare, nutrition, routine immunization & Polio Eradication.
#ForEveryChild, true partnership.
💙Nicoleta and Evelina grew up learning that inclusion starts with kindness, respect, and support. In their school in Căușeni, children learn side by side in a welcoming environment where diversity is seen as a strength. Read more: https://t.co/3fgazbpNpF

Anisa, Farnoosh and Freshta attend a school in Ghor province where a water network brings safe water to 400 students, running around the clock.
With @MOFAkr_eng, this is sustainable water access in one of Afghanistan's most remote communities.
The highlight of my week in Kandahar was meeting again with my colleague Khalilulah, a @UNICEF driver for 30+yrs.
He said "I was young when I joined. Now my beard is white, but the work still feels important". He is proud he educated his children while helping others.
12 million children vaccinated against polio in 2025, reaching 98% coverage. 16.6 million measles vaccinations. 1.6 million Penta-3 doses.
#Vaccinations save lives & results like these reflect the commitment of our partners. Grateful for their support.

Afghanistan risks losing more than 25,000 women teachers and health workers by 2030 if restrictions on girls’ education and women’s employment continue, warns @UNICEF.
More than one million girls have already been denied their right to learn.

The multilayered protection crisis in #Afghanistan has left millions exposed to severe deprivation.
@unafghanistan is using a basic human needs approach—moving beyond emergency response towards stabilizing essential services.

A pleasure to attend the Afghanistan Donor Coordination Group Meeting in Istanbul, where Donors-IFIs reaffirmed their commitment & support to basic needs programme for the Afghan people, & alignment with the United Nations Strategic Framework for Afghanistan.

For 30 years, Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food remains one of the most powerful tools to treat severe acute malnutrition. Just a small sachet of fortified peanut paste. As the sole provider of RUTF in #Afghanistan, & with donor support, we must sustain this lifeline #ForEveryChild.
Every child deserves a safe place to learn & the tools to build their future. @UNICEFAfg & partners supported 4 million children with teaching & learning materials and helped rehabilitate 232 public schools, creating better spaces for children to learn & grow across #Afghanistan.
In recent weeks, floods affected thousands of families across #Afghanistan damaging health facilities, schools & essential services.
This week, @UNICEFAfg delivered assistance to 238 flood-impacted families in Laghman, helping families meet their #children's urgent needs.
🌏 I stood in classrooms without roofs, met communities without homes, heard the screams of the wounded without a doctor.
We can continue to debate responsibility. Or we can share it.
