“In such ugly times, the only true protest is beauty” (Phil Ochs). I’m not entirely sure I agree, though I can understand the point. The associated exhibition - by far one of the most popular in #Venice this summer - is provocative and bewitching. The spectacular Palazzo Pisani Moretta provides a beautiful backdrop. This inaugural exhibition of the Fondazione Dries Van Noten ends tomorrow.
Very disappointed that this stunning self portrait by the brilliant Shani Rhys James has been labelled “adult content” on bsky for (apparently) being “sexually suggestive”. I have appealed. #censorship#artcensorship
With the stunning “Red Shoes and Palette Knife” (2008), a self portrait by the brilliant Shani Rhys James. Her latest exhibition, titled The Afternoon House, is currently on view at Connaught Brown, finishing tomorrow.
Want #Economica 📗 for just 99p on Kindle (UK) or £3.99 on Audible (UK)? If so, now is the time to splurge. This is a limited time offer before the book returns to full price. #womenwealthpower@HeadlinePress1

History is a tale of countless children's lives lost to ailments that are now easily treated. Without modern medical knowledge, my first child would not have survived birth, and the others may not have survived ordinary illnesses. Dostoyevsky's Sonya was not so fortunate.
Thrilled to feature in @Madamefigaro - huge thanks to Céline Cabourg for such an insightful and thoughtful piece, drawing together my academic work and activism alongside my latest book, Economica (published in France by #PointNemoEditions)

Honoured and humbled that Economica - my economic history of the world published today - has been shortlisted for one of France’s top literary prizes: the 2027 Prix Nos Humanités (as created by Page des libraires and la Sofia).
I am very grateful and can’t wait to join librarians, readers, booksellers and fellow authors in France very soon.

Star de L’économie, l’historienne britannique Victoria Bateman, en France pour sa première conférence, remet les femmes au cœur de la prospérité. Décryptage. https://t.co/M5gLZRk8gJ
Excited to hold a copy of the French edition of #Economica - in all of its blazing pink and gold glory - in my own hands. On bookshelves from tomorrow, it is published by #PointNemoEditions and has been translated by Sylvie Deraime and Valentine Palfrey. I can’t wait to head to Paris - and then to Blois for the @rdvhistoire (the world’s largest history festival) - to talk about how women have made the world wealthy and what we can learn from history for today. #womenwealthpower #econhist #econhis

Mark Carney, "In the heart of Germany, above Weimar, there is a wooded ridge called Ettusberg. And for decades, Goethe walked, thought, and wrote there. An oak on that ridge came to bear his name, a living monument to the highest ideals of European culture"
"As the 20th century turned dark, that same oak became trapped behind the barbed wire of Buchenwald. A silent witness to humanity's deepest moral failure. Goethe understood that ideals must be fought for, that values do not defend themselves."
"Indeed, at the end of Faust, the old man's last vision is of a free people on free ground. Nödvg, Värdjän, Siegfreiheit. Wie das Leben, de taklik si eroban mus"
"Freedom and life must be earned every single day"
"Every day"
"Every day, not once in 1945 or 1956 or 1989. Every day, including this one."
My take: 1945, 1956 and 1989 are not distant history lessons: they mark Europe’s liberation from fascism, Hungary’s uprising against Soviet rule, and the fall of the Iron Curtain. Carney’s point is that freedom is never something Europe simply achieved and banked forever - it is a choice, a responsibility and, when necessary, a struggle renewed by every generation.
I’ll be in London on 19th October at Waterstones Gower Street @gowerst_books talking about my latest book. I’d be thrilled to see you there. Tickets available here:
