Nobody talks about the student who came ready to learn, sat through the disruption, said nothing, and fell further behind while every adult in the building focused on the one who made the most noise. She is still waiting for someone to notice she was there, too.
The teacher who builds ten minutes of free reading into every day, not assessed, not recorded, not reported, is making a long bet.
The results won't appear in this year's test scores.
They will appear years later in adults who still read for pleasure.
That return is real.
It is just invisible to the systems designed to measure it.
The best teachers make that bet anyway, and we thank them for putting small steps in place to build a love of reading.
The absolute worst part of stopping for gas on a road trip is having to get back on the highway and deal with all the fucking idiots you passed 40miles ago
There’s some quirk in physics where, if there’s a small hole in a bag of mulch it will leak all over your vehicle.
But if you rip a giant hole in the bag and try to dump it out into your landscaping, almost none will fall out.
We are now in a weird era where a guy gets publicly shamed for running his sprinklers on a Tuesday, while a data center the size of a Costco quietly drains a reservoir so AI can generate a picture of your cat as a medieval knight. And the data center gets a tax incentive for it.
My child: “No, I don’t remember where I took my shoes off 3 minutes ago.”
Also my child: “You told me 5 weekends ago at 3:17 pm that we might get ice cream after school.”
the toronto blue jays are a truly insane baseball team. wdym half ur team is injured, you’ve got some random guy pitching, but you’re winning because a guy named charles mcadoo got a home run in his first mlb game
The Toronto Blue Jays are in a playoff spot and 1 game below .500 with essentially an entire rotation on the IL, Addison Barger only having 22 ABs, their All Star Catcher out for 6+ weeks, and a player who openly played with vertigo for 3 weeks 😭😭
This is a good baseball team.
I have no connection to MIT, but hearing that they are shutting down 3 of their 4 libraries has me so so sad. I think it’s a decision they will live to regret & the symbolism of it is devastating.
ADHD is writing a perfectly organized to-do list in color-coded categories, then spending 45 minutes researching the “best pens for productivity” instead of doing a single thing on the list.
Turns out that "gifted child" who used to finish exams in 10 minutes without studying, read entire novels under the desk during math class, and got praised for being hyper-mature... was actually just an undiagnosed ADHD kid running on pure, unregulated novelty and high-stakes pressure.
garlic is to cooking as vanilla extract is to baking in that the amount i add to my food is guided by reckless extravagance and utter disregard, verging on mild contempt, for the recipe as written
