My practical guide for 1st time visitor to China.

Start in Shanghai on your 1st trip. China is a continental sized country. If you like it, you can visit other cities on other trips.

Download Wechat/Alipay. Link your credit card before your trip. You need to verify by providing your passport info.

I recommend get a Chinese sim card at the airport because many Chinese apps such as rideshare taxi or order delivery apps require Chinese phone number so driver could contact you.

You might also want a non-Google translator app (Google doesn't work in China without VPN). Download a VPN app BEFORE your trip.

Remember to turn off your VPN when you need to use Chinese apps such as Wechat/Alipay.

Download AMAP app! AMAP is the BEST map app for China. Thankfully now there's English language version. Absolutely must if you're an adventurous traveler.

AMAP can take you anywhere in China from point A to point B, and will give you different options for walking, bicycling, metro, rideshare cab etc.
