The thing that makes this even more confusing, is my problem after the incident wasn't even with the referee. He got conned by Ballard and in real time it's easy to make a mistake, as he did - and as the KMI have unanimously noted.

That's when he needs VAR to bail him out and correct the decision. So to then say VAR shouldn't get involved is so baffling.

What is the point of it then? Surely an incident like this is the exact reason it's been introduced?

One of the unfortunate (imo) things about modern social media culture is that people are scared to show gratitude or emotion because they’re so scared of being perceived or made fun of by others. It’s enormously increased cynicism. I often revisit that post Liverpool interview in 2020 when we fluked a win and Arteta was still honest about the gap between Liverpool and Arsenal at that point. There’s so much noise and a lot of it (not all) is bad faith but the signal was strong at the start. And I’d say make sure to enjoy it because it doesn’t last forever
