1880s papers in Georgia talked freely of this...no secret.The narrative changed later that any gold went farther than Washington GA. I grew up ( Athens GA) near a house with double gold eagles over the fireplace supposedly from this.

Wow this #civilwargold show is a trip.the gold never got any farther than Washington GA. Old newspaper articles from Athens GA talk of area civil.war vets who were known to pay for everything in gold. Guess where some of the troops guarding the gold were from? Athens.
