*** BOOK GIVEAWAY***
To celebrate the return of #Shetland to our screens tonight, I am going to give away 2 copies of Ponies at the Edge of the World! Just comment on and retweet this post to enter.
@CatherineMMunro Unsure if this is still going, but it would be lovely to read about finding home and Shetland ponies! My grad research involved topics of place attachment/sense of place & I continually reflect on placemaking in my own life
once again can’t stress enough to go learn your local plants and animals. learn trees so you can ID them at a distance, in a car or train. learn the songs of the most common birds. stay up at night and see who comes out of hiding
But it is SO awesome & motivating (& fun to speak on a similar cultural level) to hear about the passion, ingenuity, & motivation to move these projects forward from my age peers. It gives me hope for how our future systems can work to serve biodiversity & humans 2/2
It is such a joy when I get to work with people in my general age bracket- don't get me wrong, working with older folks who are into habitat restoration is also rad & I feel lucky to have landed in this job 1/2 ...
A message to young biologists:
People will tell you not to ‘anthropomorphize’ other animals. Ignore them.
Every time you interact with another animal, imagine what they are thinking. Put yourself in their position. 🧵
@chase_prairie @chicagobotanic@ChicagoParks@UMFlint@NSF @PGAFamilyFdn @BeckSamBar@BeckyTonietto@lglyndal Congrats, this is so rad! I took a peek at the website- are there seed mix breakdowns of what you're putting into meadow lawn mix vs full prairie? I work in meadow restoration & am looking forward to hearing more about this work- especially relevant to the urban spaces I work in
For the past four years it’s been my job - nay, my PLEASURE - to be the tweeter behind the @OKWildlifeDept account. This is my final post.
It’s been my absolute honor to roast and ratio some of you into the ground in the name of science. Let’s take a trip down memory lane: 🧵
I think we might have a bumble bee colony under our deck (either Eastern or Two-spotted) & it makes me so happy when I see the lil' workers hanging around 🥹🐝
Going on a walk with me means getting unasked for information about the herbaceous & woody plants you can eat along the way. Did y'all know young Basswood leaves are GREAT for salads? And their sap is yummy boiled down; young buds are yummy; flowers are great for salads
Please fire your landscaper/gardener if they start talking about using landscape/weed fabric ok. ESPECIALLY if they're loading mulch onto it for some godforsaken reason
@muqri97 What species of milkweed? Some can be a wee bit finicky. These were fresh seeds from 2023 of whorled & butterfly, kept in the fridge (dry) until I most stratified for ~8 weeks in perlite. I left the bag out on the table after that & half of them sprouted before I even planted 😅
Cross-post from bluesky:
The native seed sowing set up tonight. First year using soil blocks; looking forward to seeing how they help with root development (and less pot chaos) #nativeplants#gardening#nativeseeds#ontario
Update: 14/18 milkweed blocks germinated, 11/12 vervain blocks germinated, but complete silence from the (admittedly old and not well stored) vernonia seed and gentian :')
