7. Be honest with yourself about what you can do and what your scholarship does.
8. You don't have to be an academic celebrity to be successful. Your work is still useful, interesting, and valuable.
9. Writing a review can be a good entryway into publishing.

5. Post-docs often require a research project that is your next project, not the dissertation becoming a book.
6. Post-docs are most useful if you use them to work on getting a job as much as research. Don't rest on it.

3. Err on the side of applying - making materials is hard & time-consuming & you CAN say no to a job.
4. Emotional difficulty is a real factor & job searches are extremely successful. Pretending that it isn't is unhealthy for all of us. Know your limits and it's ok.

#Vagantes2019 This is already a lively discussion looking for ways to bring our students into conversation with their perceptions of the Middle Ages and to develop a set of skills that encourage a critical examination of our history and our understanding of it.

Moving from the past & into current pedagogical practices, Jovana Andelkovic presents "Rebranding 'Darkness' - Teaching and Advertising Medieval History in British Columbia." Andelkovic wants to use this survey data as chance for dialogue about student perceptions. #Vagantes2019

Two different responses to "Why was the Middle Ages dark?" included that there were no lights and no streetlamps. Others: "People were stupid" came up a few times, and "Like in their art, everything was flat and dull." There were no positive responses.
