If I was Prime Minister , if I was Burnham , watching European cities ablaze . . . I’d instigate a ‘wealth tax’ at about 9.01am tomorrow morning . Just saying . Or should we just ‘eat cake’ ?
There is growing concern amongst emergency planners that this vaguebooking* of threat to public is only leading to community anxiety and tension. Address the nation properly and lay it out to us as adults https://t.co/2VlMn6v8Y7
Dear @virginmedia may I respectfully suggest that sending a letter saying, 'You couldn't have taken over the account at a more exciting time, with so much to look forward to,' is not the best way to respond to a call to your bereavement helpline. You're welcome.
Every use of a leaf blower is a massacre.
A typical blower pushes air out at 150 to 200 mph. That's faster than a Category 5 hurricane, aimed straight at the layer of leaves where next year's butterflies, moths, and fireflies are hoping to spend the winter.
Woolly bear caterpillars curl up under those leaves. Luna moths hide their cocoons in them, disguised as dead leaves. Fireflies lay their eggs in them. Bumblebee queens sleep an inch or two below. Blast the beds down to bare dirt and all of it gets scattered, exposed or bagged for the landfill.
Flip it to vacuum mode and it's even worse. It sucks up whatever's in the leaves, insects and spiders included, and chops it up.
In 2019, Germany's environment ministry told people not to use leaf blowers unless they're indispensable, because small animals get sucked in or blown around and damaged.
Get a rake. Move the leaves off the lawn and driveway, pile them whole in your garden beds and under your trees, and leave them there until spring.
Next year's bumblebees and fireflies will thank you.
Not kidding when I say, a lot of the misery of modern life derives from the fact that we live on computers when we should be living in villages bordered by woods, canopied by stars, hearing the owl shriek in the night and waking to the clear ringing of bells.
This is absolute bullshit. After October 7th the entire world stood in solidarity with Israel. They painted the Brandenburg Gate, Eiffel Tower and Empire State in Israeli colors. But we squandered that sympathy by committing the worst crimes imaginable.
I must confess that when I was younger I expected the future to have more robot butlers and jetpacks, and less proto fascism and plague, but life is full of surprises.
One of the more disturbing elements of the world of Fahrenheit 451 is that the classics still exist, they’ve just been wholly rewritten to remove anything that makes them interesting or challenging. Our addiction to a fully frictionless existence is going to kill us.
I used to half believe in American exceptionalism. Growing up with JFK, MLK, RFK, Beverley Hillbilies, western movies, the Banana Splits, Apollo missions; then in later years Woody Allen films, the Doors, Motown, Ali, Shaft, Star Wars, yes it did seem full of great things, if not without problems. Then I studied the US at university, taught its history & politics to thousands of students, visited its great cities & stunning landscapes & I remained largely a fan. My faith in the US took a hit with its dubious wars after 2000. Yet electing Obama gave fresh hope, my positive views of the US given a re-boot. But something flipped in 2016, & it's only gotten worse, this amazing, if flawed nation, is now personified by the truly monstrous Trump. It now seems exceptional only in being exceptionally dumb, corrupt & despicable.
I have never seen such a blatant double standard in my life.
In 2018, when 12 young Thai football players and their coach were trapped in a cave in Thailand, the world did not say, “They are not our citizens.” Britain sent some of its best cave divers. Australia sent doctors and rescue experts. The United States sent more than 40 military personnel and equipment. Countries came together and worked with the Thai authorities to get those children out.
And they did as clear in the video below. They saved all 13 of them.
Tonight, in Gaza, people woke up to the screams and cries of children, women, and elderly people after a six-story building known as the “Al-Saada” building collapsed. Nearly 100 people were sheltering inside. Dozens of tents surrounded the building. Many of those trapped under the rubble are children.
They are still under the rubble. So where are the international rescue teams?
Why aren't neighboring Arab countries sending rescue teams? Why aren't Western countries sending specialized teams to save whoever can still be saved?
My heart aches for my people in Gaza :(
A US embassy staffer accused of having indecent images of children, is flown out before the Met can question him - wrapped in diplomatic protection he doesn’t even hold as a diplomat. Special relationship. Special rules. Justice optional.
It's time for my occasional reminder that balloons don't fly up to grandma up in heaven. They go up about five miles, burst, and fall back down.
What lands is a translucent scrap of latex with a ribbon attached, floating on water, stuck on land, looking almost exactly like a jellyfish. Sea turtles, seabirds and fish eat them.
Balloons are the deadliest piece of plastic a seabird can ingest, something like 32 times more likely to kill than a hard fragment, because soft latex folds and blocks the gut instead of passing through.
The ribbon stays intact for years, and it wraps around necks, wings and flippers long after the balloon itself is gone.
The biodegradable balloons don't fix the problem. University of Tasmania researchers buried latex balloons in industrial compost, the fastest breakdown environment that exists, and dug them up 16 weeks later fully intact.
Louisiana made intentional releases a finable offense this year. Most of Europe has banned them.
If you want to mark something: plant a tree, light a candle, blow bubbles, ring a bell. Whatever you're releasing it for, it isn't going where you want it to go.
In England, under section 1 of the Malicious Communications Act 1988, the maximum prison sentence for a comment like this is up to 2 years’ imprisonment.

This is not OK.
Today is September 12, 2026.
The number of people Israel has slaughtered in Gaza since October 2023 has reached 73,787.
Among them are more than 100 relatives of mine and my wife.
Another 174,738 people have been wounded.
Since October 2025 alone, Israeli forces have murdered more than 1,359 people, including babies.
And today, Mr. Trump said that “there’s very little happening right now in Gaza,” and that “it’s not the place that people are talking about actually now.”
Of course, if by “people” you mean the Western mainstream media, you’re correct.
But no, sir. A lot is still happening in Gaza, if you are actually following the news.
Thousands of people remain buried beneath the rubble of their homes.
Cancer patients, dialysis patients, people with chronic illnesses, amputees, and those needing surgery or other specialized medical care still struggle to access essential treatment, medicine, and painkillers.
Farmers cannot reach their farms. There is no access to water, seeds, or fertilizers.
Thousands of families, including my relatives, continue to live in tents on the streets, exposed to the elements, for more than two years.
Schools and hospitals have not been rebuilt.
And children in Gaza are now entering their fourth year without regular schooling.
Gaza has not stopped suffering simply because the Western mainstream media, much of whose coverage has favored Israel and amplified its propaganda, has completely stopped paying attention, or because you and those who fund Israel’s crimes and shield it have never cared about the Palestinians.
It is so frustrating that the media will not report the threat of climate change like they are doing with AI.
AI, they are warning may kill us all.
When it comes to climate they tend to say ‘stop with the negativity and the gloom and doom, what do scientists know?’ when the reality is even more serious:
