Accurate! Jealousy and envy are human emotions. We are all capable of experiencing them, just as we are capable of anger, greed and selfishness.
You can see it in childhood. Give two children gifts but make one slightly better or bigger. A child who was perfectly happy with their gift moments earlier may suddenly become unhappy after seeing what another child received. Nothing about their gift has changed, but their perception of its value has changed after comparing it with someone else’s.
We carry this same tendency into adulthood. We compare our relationships, careers, salaries, houses, cars and achievements with those of our friends, relatives and even strangers. Sometimes, another person’s success makes us feel inadequate, resentful or even happy when that person fails!
What we must do is acknowledge that we are all capable of feeling jealous of our friends, family and even strangers, and consciously work on it. It may never disappear completely, but it can be controlled and suppressed, just as we can learn to manage our anger, selfishness and other human weaknesses!
