Emotions are a beautiful thing. They allow us to love and develop relationships with the people we care about, which when it comes down it, is the definition of happiness.
But when it comes to business and making money, emotions are our biggest weakness.
I work for a hedge fund and I can categorically tell you that the biggest players are ice cold in their decision making. Theyβve been promoted time and time again because when things are hard theyβre consistently good at making decision in terms of investments (and people) that lead to good outcomes.
This is the same with trading. When the numbers become significant to you and the drawdown becomes large, the pros are separated from the amateurs.
We as developing traders spend a lot of time trying to be technically better, reading books, watching YouTube videos⦠but the unfortunate truth is that very very few of us are emotionally prepared for how far this game will push us.
So how do we get better?
I believe there is significant emotional edge to be gained away from the screens. Itβs not about becoming a robot, because that would ruin the fun of life.
But significant discipline in our personal lives is a place where we can start.
Do you look after yourself physically?
Do you eat well to keep your blood sugar steady?
Are your relationships with the people closest to you functional and healthy?
Are you happy?
Donβt get me wrong. We all need a technical edge and these things wonβt make you profitable in isolation
But risking an amount per trade that is significant to you will eventually push you close to breaking pointβ¦
And what will keep you going and following your plan at that point wonβt be some bro on YouTube
It will be the ability to control your emotions.
