THOUGHTS: Tomb Raider was one of the staples of gaming in the 90s, introducing Lara Croft as a strong and empowering protagonist that is loved by millions of people
The dedicated fan base have been asking for remasters and remakes for years now, and with several games making a strong and prominent return such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot and most recently GEX and Clock Tower, among many others, Tomb Raider is nowhere to be found, neither with remakes nor remasters/ports to be playable on modern consoles, neither through digital nor physical sales or even #PlayStation Plus Classics
This comes after a controversial change in direction of the franchise that came in 2013, as a reboot erased and replaced the original character, backstory and play style with a completely alien version to the original. The franchise as a whole appears to shy away from its fun, sassy, empowering and superheroic origins that put it on the map to begin with, and fans have been wondering why something as simple as remaster or backwards compatibility, which many games even from the former publisher (Square Enix) own catalogue received, is too much to ask for.
Players have asked time and time again, and were assured that they were “heard” but nothing came to be, even after the @embracergroup acquisition, who promised to bring back old franchises from the slate of games they acquired from Square Enix’s western catalogue, yet no announcement has been made, other than a new game developed on Unreal Engine 5 and published by Amazon is coming, and it will feature a “unified” timeline, whose specifics are yet to be shared.
As a long-time fan, I feel concerned for the future of the franchise, as the current vision behind it which started with the 2013 reboot seems to shy away from those roots, and I fear that the trend of using nostalgia bait to sell new products, in the form of collaboration with other games (most of which felt more authentic to the root than the actual games) and perhaps integrating the reboot character and story into a faux sense of remake in the form of reimagined of the classics without actually making the original titles accessible on modern systems.
This is in no way an attack on player preferences or the teams behind the recent games, but it’s saddening and concerning to see how the iconic Lara Croft has been demonized time and time again as “bikini and pistols” or “pointy t**s” or several snarky condescending remarks from so-called professionals, when in reality classic Lara Croft has been a source of empowerment for men and women alike, with her “unachievable” superheroic boss persona that makes fun of hardships and became the player’s cool companion on a dangerous and fun journey.
Several industry figures have labeled the classics as an “objectified” representation of women, which I vehemently disagree with as she represented defying all boundaries imposed on women by sexist mentalities. She was a strong, beautiful, sexy, bossy, rich, self-made icon who rejected her inheritance and an arrange marriage to pursue her passion.
With all that said, Lara Croft, the classic gaming icon deserves to have her authentic return, as did many prominent franchises from the 90s, hopefully in a similar fashion to original Dante’s retune in Devil May Cry 5, after a disappointing and unauthentic reboot for DmC.
Those who claimed Lara Croft needs to be made “grounded” and “believable” are missing the whole point of why Lara Croft was a GTA-scale icon in gaming, and are better off looking for that in another franchise
