I’ve asked this before but is there any historical event that is like the Opposite of 9/11. Like something so good that happened that it changed the world forever
American politics began to slowly slide into hell when our political parties started using popular vote primaries to select candidates in the 1970s vs. party insiders selecting candidates in smoke filled back rooms.
The insiders in back rooms selected better candidates.
Many years ago, back in the days when I was still a stock picker, I was having lunch with another stock picker friend.
“I bought more shares of XYZ Corp.,” he said. "It had dropped 95%. I figured, how much lower could it possibly go?
"I found out.
“It could go to zero." 😉
Reasons to pursue FI besides early retirement:
- Life is better without money stress.
- You can tell a toxic workplace to pound sand.
- Big ticket emergencies (a new AC unit, a new transmission) aren’t emergencies, anymore.
- When you get laid off, it’s not a big deal.
Option 1: Pack a U-Haul and move literally anywhere else where you can have a huge gap between income and expenses.
Option 2: Use NYC real estate prices as an argument ‘late stage capitalism’ and don’t do Jack shit to improve your situation.
I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time.
We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s.
We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN.
For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee.
In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it.
Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further.

@SimplicitasOpes Cool. But the odds are that that doesn’t happen. Fine to aim for the stars, but if the moonshot doesn’t happen it’s probably good to admit defeat and move onto something that makes mathematical sense.
I will admit it. If you asked me how a 50/50 split between VLUE/MTUM has done since inception, I would immediately say it has underperformed.
I would be wrong. MTUM has done all the lifting but still, I'm impressed.
"it is what it is" and "it's in God's hands" is more about accepting things that you have no power to change instead of dwelling on it and driving yourself crazy.
