@FlightFreeUK @mumblemiler @wilcol@Change It's aimed at saving the jobs of people who work in the travel sector ( as the brief says).
This could include travel agents, the companies who made food for flights, engineers, pilots, police, customs, drivers, retail staff etc not to mention the impact on other countries.
@wilcol @mumblemiler @Change@FlightFreeUK The aims are to protect employment within the sector, stop government endorsed cowboy companies ripping people off and allow those who need to to travel. It impacts other economies as well as our own. I fully understand and respect your position. A solution is needed.
@wilcol @mumblemiler @Change@FlightFreeUK It's all linked. The title of the petition doesn't allow for all of it's aims. Have you read the brief or updates? There's 400k people who feel passionately about this.
@wilcol @mumblemiler @Change@FlightFreeUK Flying is globally elite now, and perhaps was thirty years ago. If flying was globally elite the the travel industry wouldn't be worth what it is. Tourism is a lifeline for some countries, especially those in the third world. What ideas do you have to replace that income ?
@mumblemiler @wilcol@Change@FlightFreeUK Hardly a false equivalent. The scheme saved jobs and helped people in the sector keep their job and feed their families. Have you lived on JSA before? It's a belittling experience I don't wish upon anyone.
@wilcol @mumblemiler @Change@FlightFreeUK Perhaps. As a vegetarian I might disagree.
Are you saying that due to the environmental impact of travel the employees of that sector don't deserve any support? You mentioned swapping industries, which industry currently has 60k vacancies? (Potentially 50k more as of 01.10.21).
@mumblemiler @wilcol@Change@FlightFreeUK We pay tax,government spends it. We don't have a say in how that money is spent other than in voting for who we see fit. It's the government's money, they have money for wars, they should have money to save jobs.What costs more -subsidised PCR test, or thousands more on JSA?
@mumblemiler @wilcol@Change@FlightFreeUK Dwaw the line at a small measure that could potentially save thousands of jobs and prevent thousands signing on to welfare, largest expenditure of the government. Taxpayers paid to support hospitality with the eat out help out scheme,why can't we support aviation?
@wilcol@FlightFreeUK@Change I like the idea. So far over 60k people in the aviation sector have been made redundant. Which industry did you have in mind?
@wilcol@FlightFreeUK@Change We have collectively paid to boost the hospitality sector which saved jobs. People who mop the floors and make the coffees in airports are seeking the same government support. The petition is not trying to increase flights, it's trying to save jobs.
@FlightFreeUK@wilcol@Change I think saving jobs is a noble cause, that's one of the main aims of the petition. It's not about boosting or increasing aviation, it's about boosting the sector from its current position which is bleak, mass redundancies loom.
@DavidWorsfold I think those who work in the travel sector feel forgotten. Jobs in the hospitality sector were saved with eat out to help out. Travel sector hasn't received similar support. The PCR testing cost is deterring people from travelling which will have a knock of effect on employment.
✈After losing their jobs and facing the worst crisis in living aviation history, there are pilots who fear they may never fly again.
With 20 days left before #furlough ends how many more pilots must face further brutal effects of the pandemic.
