A special day for one VPD family!
Superintendent Phil and Inspector Mike Heard had the honour of telling their niece that she has officially been hired by @Vancouverpd as our newest recruit. Congratulations and welcome to the VPD family!

Welcome to today’s Vancouver Police graduates of Class 178, as they begin a new chapter in their lives and start their careers in service to our city.
Policing is more than a profession. Officers make a commitment to protecting others, standing up for those in need, and serving with integrity, courage, and compassion. By choosing this path, these recruits have chosen a career that demands dedication, sacrifice, and a genuine desire to make a difference.
On behalf of the entire VPD, I want to thank these men and women for stepping forward to serve our community. We are honoured to have them join our ranks, and we look forward to supporting them as they grow into the next generation of Vancouver police officers.
Alfred Wong was out for dinner with his parents on the night of January 13, 2018. They were driving home.
What should have been a family night for the Wongs ended in a horrifying tragedy that shook the city of Vancouver - outrage and fear that someone so young, an innocent family, could be caught in the crossfire of a violent gang dispute.
They were just out for dinner.
Alfred’s death was needless. It was, and remains, unacceptable to us at the Vancouver Police Department and to the city as a whole.
Alfred and his family did not deserve this. While some may say the verdict brings a sense of closure, it cannot and will not end the grief of this family, and of Alfred’s friends and loved ones. That grief will be with them always.
As Alfred’s mother has said in her victim impact statement – there were no last words, no goodbyes.
That night marked the beginning of an intensive investigation by the VPD and law enforcement partners in BC and Ontario to bring the person responsible to justice. Project Heedless would eventually include nearly 60 sworn and civilian members from VPD, as well as officers from Durham Regional Police, Toronto Police, and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit BC.
Many on the team, including me, are parents ourselves. We took Alfred’s murder personally and continue to share in the family’s grief.
That’s why so many VPD members have been in court over the years to be alongside Alfred’s family and loved ones.
This court process has been long for the family, for the investigators, and for everyone involved. Alfred’s loved ones have shown tremendous strength. They did not give up. We did not give up. Crown prosecutors did not give up.
We would like to thank the Crown prosecutors for their diligence and commitment throughout. I know your efforts are deeply appreciated.
The sentence handed down yesterday was the best we could hope for, although we recognize there is no prison term in current sentencing guidelines that can adequately reflect the toll taken in this case.
It will hopefully send a message to anyone bringing weapons and violent intent onto the streets of Vancouver – regardless of how long it takes, you will pay a price.
Inspector Mike Heard
Project Heedless Team Commander
#VPDNews The Vancouver Police Department is advising eastside and southeast-side residents in the city to be aware of a rash of catalytic converter thefts this June and July.
A total of 41 thefts have been reported in an area bordered by Ontario Street and Fraser Street to the west, Marine Drive to the south, Boundary Road to the east, and 1st Avenue to the north. Twenty-three thefts were reported in June and 18 have been reported so far this month.
“We’re typically seeing these incidents happening between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. under cover of darkness,” says Sgt. Adam Donaldson. “Thieves use angle grinders or portable saws and can be finished in a minute or so.”
“Catalytic converters contain precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Rhodium alone is worth more than $9,000 per gram in Canada. Once removed, the converters are generally sold to scrap metal dealers. The result for the victims of these thefts is a costly insurance deductible, as well as the frustrating inconvenience of having to get their vehicles repaired.”
The most common vehicles targeted are SUVs and other vehicles with high ground clearance, including:
➡️Toyota Highlander
➡️Toyota 4Runner
➡️Lexus RX (RX330 RX350)
➡️Hyundai Tucson
➡️Hyundai Santa Fe
Police recommend drivers park in well-lit areas, and:
➡️Safeguard rear access to the vehicle by parking against a wall, or obstruction, making it difficult to access the catalytic converter
➡️Park indoors where possible
➡️Consider purchasing catalytic converter cover or shield
➡️Consider vehicle alarm with motion or vibration sensor
➡️Consider motion sensitive cameras in area where vehicle is parked
Anyone witnessing a catalytic converter theft is asked to call 911 immediately. Anyone with information about this rash of incidents is asked to contact Vancouver Police.
#VPDNews: Crown Counsel has approved a charge after Vancouver Police arrested a man who allegedly wielded a chainsaw at people downtown.
The incident happened near Davie and Denman streets last night at approximately 7:00 p.m. The man was yelling obscenities near a coffee shop patio when he allegedly turned on an electric chainsaw and began walking toward people.
Bystanders ran away, and no one was injured.
Vancouver Police officers arrested the man at Beach Avenue and Burnaby Street within three minutes of receiving the 911 call.
David Meadows, 67, has been charged with one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
While patrolling Stanley Park, our bike officers helped a tourist who had fallen from an e-scooter and couldn't move. With paramedics on the way, the officers ran 1 km to a lifeguard station, retrieved the wagon, and safely transported her to an accessible location so she could receive timely medical care. #ServeWithCompassion #VPD
#VPDNews: The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is appealing for a potential witness whose Tesla may have recorded video of a senior targeted in a distraction theft on June 23.
The VPD issued a release about the distraction theft of the 73-year-old woman whose necklace was stolen in the incident.
Investigators canvassed for CCTV at the scene. After reviewing that footage, investigators believe a grey Tesla in the 500-block of Lillooet Street between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. on June 23 may have recorded additional video that could help the case. It’s possible the driver may also have witnessed the incident.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen a number of cases like this in recent months in which elderly people are targeted, and their precious family heirlooms stolen,” says Constable Megan Lui. “These are vulnerable victims just out and about living their lives. We want to be able to retrieve this jewelry and return it to its rightful owner.”
Anyone with information is asked to call 604-717-3321 to speak with investigators.
The final whistle has blown in Vancouver, but the work behind the scenes never stops.
A huge thank you to every VPD member who worked tirelessly to keep our city safe throughout the World Cup.
The commitment, professionalism, and teamwork made these matches a success.

Interesting how some are quick to criticize, instead of thinking…
Just 2 officers doing a bar check, part of their regular duties, or
Wanting to get out of the heat for a few minutes, or
Taking a break & getting hydrated after walking the beat & carrying 30-40 lb of gear, or
Just caught up in the #FIFA excitement & went in to catch the score, like most in the city.
So where’s the issue? 🤷🏽♂️

- Many of the officers working FIFA haven’t had a day off for the past month.
- They work at least 11-13 hrs/day, away from their families, so fans can safely enjoy their FIFA experience.
- Most log on 15-20,000+ steps/day.

That’s a wrap on the last FIFA game in Vancouver! Congratulations to Switzerland on their victory and to Colombia for their hard-fought match.
Watch parties will continue in Vancouver for games in other host cities, until the final two teams face off in New Jersey on July 19.
Thank you to the fans who brought energy and excitement to the games, and to our public safety partners, the planners, volunteers, and event staff, and the residents and visitors who all contributed to safe and memorable games at BC Place and the excitement of the Last Mile.

#VPDNews: An assault charge has been approved against a man who has been involved in several incidents in the Granville Street Pedestrian Zone in recent weeks.
At approximately 6:00 last night, officers patrolling the Granville Pedestrian Zone were approached by a woman who identified a man she said swung his fist in her direction.
As officers approached to speak with him, they observed him try to punch another woman. The suspect fled from police, and was arrested following a brief foot chase.
The man has been the subject of several complaints involving violence and confrontational behaviour in the Granville Pedestrian Zone.
Our heartfelt condolences to the Durham Regional Police following the heartbreaking loss of one of their constables in a motor vehicle collision today. A second constable was also seriously injured.
Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones, and with all of their colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

Our team is out in full force at the Last Mile, connecting with future applicants and sharing what it means to be part of @VancouverPD
Even while recruiting, we're always ready to help. We even reunited a lost child with their mom.
Safe to say we made two successful recruitments today... just one was a little too young to apply. 💙
It’s going to be another busy day downtown and at the Fan Festival today, as Switzerland plays Colombia at 1:00 in the final World Cup game in Vancouver.
Please plan ahead and stay aware of your surroundings. Report anything suspicious or concerning to police.
Our officers will be easy to spot in their bright yellow vests, so please don’t hesitate to say hello or ask for assistance. In an emergency, call 911.

Think driving uninsured is worth the risk? If you’re deemed at fault in an accident, you could face devastating out-of-pocket costs and legal lawsuits.
Protect your financial future, set a reminder and ensure that your policy is up to date today. The fine alone is $598.
In just three days (June 28–30), 44 drivers were ticketed and 4 received warnings for expired insurance.
Thank you to our Team Canada players for giving it their all today, and congratulations to Morocco on a hard-fought win. We all hoped for a different outcome, but we’re proud of how far our team has come and how they’ve inspired national pride from coast to coast throughout this tournament.
There is still much to celebrate. Please do so responsibly.
