Matt Painter has had one McDonald's All-American in 19 years.
Yet Purdue has the most Big 10 wins in the last decade.
His recruiting secret isn't about rankings - it's about 3 things most coaches completely ignore.
Here's what he looks for instead:🧵
I’ve spent all July at AAU tournaments and I think a lot of kids have the game confused. Basketball IQ Is definitely at an all time low.
The best player on the floor will make everyone else around them better. It’s not about dropping 30 points or highlight tapes. If you’re talented, that stuff will take care of itself.
High school recruitment is at an all time low right now so it’s more important than ever to know how to play the game the right way. Drive and kicks, advancing the ball, extra passes, communication, reading screen coverages, etc…
For the kids: Ignore outside voices and trust your coaches who are preaching to you to play the right way.
When you disrespect a teammate, treat them poorly, or talk behind their back, you are hurting your team. Even if you dislike your teammates, you need to set aside your differences and get along for the sake of the team.
Ten things mentally tough athletes don’t do in games:
1. Make excuses
2. Complain
3. Give up
4. Get distracted
5. Lose their temper
6. Panic
7. Dwell on mistakes
8. Get complacent
9. Stay in their comfort zone
10. Play selfishly
Unfortunately, a large group of people sell players/ parents on the AAU basketball model of traveling all over the country to play against “the best” “on circuits,” but in reality, college coaches aren't watching, and these players are getting scammed.
If you aren't in an organization that prioritizes DEVELOPMENT, knowledge, friendships, sportsmanship, and love of the game….you are probably in the wrong spot.
