What makes this such a valuable Heritage Month archive is that these women were articulating, a transformation that demographic categories were struggling to capture Black identity was never one complexion, accent, class position, cultural reference point or consumer profile.

Nearly twenty years into democracy, perhaps the more interesting question was no longer simply whether Black people were visible in South African media, but whether the industry could imagine Blackness expansively enough to accommodate who Black South Africans were becoming.
