I'm a second-generation Australian on my father's side and a third-generation Australian on my mother's. I bear no ties to colonisation. I have my own bloodied history of hardship and trauma, as do many of us. My parents and grandparents were legal immigrants who earned their right to become citizens of this country, and they were proud to do so. Because of them, being Australian became my birthright, and I, too, am proud to call myself Australian. WE did not invade anything. Like most Australians, we call this our home because that's exactly what it is. Every country on earth is a melting pot of cultures and races as civilisations through history have risen and fallen, and migrated to new lands and claimed it their own. In this country, everyone is, and should be, entitled to an equal voice. Giving one group more of a voice than others is not promoting a more equal society, but is by its very definition inequality. Today, I voted no to racism, no to division, no to separation, and no to bringing race into the Constitution. And I will never be ashamed of that. I hope many of you choose to do the same.
