THIS IS NOT “MARRIAGE”. THIS IS ABUSE💔!!!

One of the many SGBV cases I handled in Kaduna was the case of a mother of 6, who was beaten mercilessly by her husband. Reason? She asked for food for her children and he thought she was nagging him too much. So he threw her out of the house at night.

She ran to her father’s house, bleeding, broken, with nowhere to go. But the father insulted her and threw her out too. Words said: “Go back to your husband’s house even if he will kill you.” Why? Because he feared that her divorce would bring “extra responsibility” back to his compound.

So for 2 days she slept on the streets. Exposed to rain, hunger, rapists, killers, evil. All because she asked for food. All because the man decided her life was worth less than his evil pride and stinginess. This is what abuse and negligence looks like in our communities.

So let's be clear about this. Beating women, starving children, and throwing mothers on the street must be condemned by our traditional, and especially religious leaders. Because our Pipu listen to them more than anyone or government.

To the best of my knowledge, neither our cultures defend it, nor our religions justifie it, and no “what will people say” is worth more than a woman’s safety, her health and her life.

To every woman reading this:

“WIFE” and "DAUGHTER” are just titles. But “ALIVE” is the foundation. If staying in a marriage means death, then leaving is wisdom, not shame.

Hunger is not “nagging”, and asking for food for your children is not a crime. A man who punishes you for it has failed his duty, not you failing in yours.

Also, the street is not the only option for you. When both husband’s door and father’s door close, look for other doors: trusted aunties, women’s groups, case managers, SGBV shelters, NGOs, etc. Sleeping on the street invites rape and death. Reaching out is strength.

Please be willing to REPORT and TESTIFY against such evil acts, as your silence protects abusers and empowers them to target their next victim.

And never forget that women are not “too much responsibility”. A daughter is never a burden. Your complaints are never “nagging”, and you certainly deserve safety, food, and respect. If they won’t give it, walk toward people who will.

To the fathers who throw daughters out, that daughter was your responsibility yesterday. Fear of “extra mouths” will not save you on the Day of Accountability.

To the husbands who beat and starve women and children, “Ar-rijalu qawwamuna ‘alan nisa” is a TRUST, not a license for CRUELTY.

Sister, if this is your story, you are not alone. You are not “stubborn” for wanting safety. You are not “disrespectful” for setting boundaries. You must always CHOOSE YOURSELF, choose your peace, and choose your life.

When sexually harassed, do you also blame him/her for doing something wrong or for not doing something right?

Or are you the type that LISTENs to the victims/survivors first, then COMFORT and ENCOURAGE her/him to say their truth, and/or WALK with her/him on the pathway to JUSTICE???

Do you help survivors to access SGBV services that help them to RECOVER from the trauma, by referring them to where they could access medical, legal and psycho-social support?

Are you a person that usually stand in SOLIDARITY with survivors, or the one that stigmatise, speak or act AGAINST the survivors???

VDCare celebrates the recently achieved JUSTICE in Kaduna State, Nigeria!

“In a landmark ruling, three men—John Moses, Yakubu Mohammed, and Mustapha Musa—have been sentenced to death by hanging and surgical castration following their conviction on two charges of rape in Kaduna.

Between June 2024 and February 2025, the Ministry secured three convictions for rape in the state, sending a strong message of deterrence.

John Moses was convicted on June 7, 2024, under charges of rape and incest, receiving the death sentence and castration. Yakubu Mohammed was convicted on February 6, 2025, for similar charges, also receiving the same penalty. Mustapha Musa, convicted on February 24, 2025, for two counts of rape, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The cases were prosecuted by legal experts M.P. Danjuma Esq. and Halimatu S. Bello Esq. The sentences mark a firm stand against rape and gender violence in the region, with hopes for further reforms in the justice system”.

Four days ago, the 27th of February, was marked as Black History Month!

This year's was marked in honor of a black girl called Anarcha Westcott. She was a 17 year enslaved girl who underwent roughly 30 operations without Anesthesia for a Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), an abnormal connection between vagina and the bladder; urine coming through vagina).

She healed after the surgery, and James Marion Sim (we refuse to refer to him as doctor) was the racist man who performed these surgeries on her, and was denoted as the father of Gynecology.

However, we would like to say Anarcha is the mother of gynecology. Without her strength, grit, and bravery, she wouldn't have survived those procedures.

We couldn't imagine doing surgery on someone without some form of anesthesia. Black history is America's history. The story must be told even when it's not pretty.

Supporting survivors is not debatable, and this includes shifting the blame where it belongs: onto perpetrators.

VDCare held a one day progress review meeting with Kaduna State Legislators, SSAs to Kaduna State Governor, the Media, and key CSOs that are working against Sexual Harassment on Campus!

Together, we had discussed the activities of our Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy (ASHA) Cluster, especially on addressing the prevalence of sexual harassment in the Nigerian Tertiary Educational Institutions.

We have also deliberated and understood the relative provisions of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Prohibition Bill, 2023, and converses on the composition and work done by the established Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition Committee (ISHP), set up by some tertiary institutions we are currently working with.

We had also reviewed the progress made by the institutions who have establish Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition Committee or any other similar committee.

We had interactively learnt from each other, exchanged ideas and defined improved strategies across various institutions in handling cases of sexual harassment on campus.

VDCare has been ENGAGING the MEDIA and SECURITY Agencies in Kaduna State for better impact in the fight against violent extremisms and sexual and gender based violence.

We have had in our event, five media houses from TV and Radio Stations in Kaduna, Mr Suleiman Maiyaki, who was representing the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and also a former aid to the immediate past Kaduna State Commissioner of Human Services and Social Development, Mr. Zailani AJ Musa, representing the Kaduna State Vigilante Service (KADVS), and Madam Aisha from Kaduna State Correctional Services!

Represented by Felicia Yahaya, VDCare attended a three days capacity building workshop on Policy Review and Development in Abuja, Nigeria.

As part of SCALE Project's mandate to sustainably strengthen the capacity of it cluster organisations, this Policy Brief Development Workshop was conducted on the 15th, 16th and 17th days of April, 2024, at RockView Hotel, in Abuja, Nigeria.

VDCare paid an Advocacy visit to the Kaduna State Ministry of Education today, the 8th of April, 2024.

Since there has been a change in the leadership of the Ministry and new appointments were made, we had a re-familiarization meeting, re-introduced our organization to them again, introduced SCALE Project, ASHA Cluster and the activities conducted so far.

After we were welcomed by the Permanent Secretary, the Director of Public Schools, his Deputy and the Director of Female Education, we dived into a deep conversation about the prevalence of sexual harassment within the Kaduna State’s tertiary educational institutions, we went further and informed the Ministry about the work that VDCare has been doing since 2017 to increase the enrolment and retention of girls back into secondary schools, and previous and current activities against sexual and gender based violence in primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions.

Further, we conversed on VDCare’s stakeholders engagement programs, TV, Radio and Social Media sensitization and awareness campaigns to promote girl child education, gender equality, and reduce the menace of SGBV.

We also solicited for their support, involvement and participation in the implementing of our activities and solution ideas that would help us to collectively reduce or tackle the menace of sexual harassment within our learning institutions in Kaduna State, and Nigeria.

In his speech, the Permanent Secretary expressed his excitement about our projects, recognised our presence and noted VDCare as one of the organisations complementing the efforts of the Ministry in Kaduna state. He promised us that the Ministry will accord us their full support and even participate in some our programs when there is need for them to do so.

We concluded the meeting at 1:00 in the afternoon, exchanged pleasantries, and moved back to the office of the Director of Public Schools to snap pictures, as the Permanent Secretary said that he does not like or take pictures, but granted us the permission to do so without him. We captured the pictures, exchanged pleasantries, said our good byes and departed at 1:10pm.

VDCare team, DEBRIEFING after training of twenty (20) adolescents (10 girls and 10 boys, 10 Christians and 10 Muslims), on peace building, religious tolerance and inter-communal trust.

We usually sit for such meetings after every activity to identify areas of improvement and review our team’s and individual performance, strengths and weaknesses.

We strongly believe that such debriefing is crucial to the success and sustainability of our projects, in various parts of Northern Nigeria!
