@lunason_R@yzonker@nepnep1111_ Nothing was stopping AMD from making the R3 a 6C/12T, the R5 a 8C/16T, the R7 a 12C/24T, and the 16C/32T as the only configuration for R9 SKUs. But why bother, when they can do the bare minimum and get away with it, just like Nvidia still pushing 8GB of VRAM on midrange GPUs.
AMD is becoming just as bad as Intel during its quad core era.
No core count increase on Ryzen 5 since Zen 1 (2017)
No core count increase on Ryzen 7 since Zen 1 (2017)
Now asking $350 for a one-trick pony CPU from 2022
At this point they only care about milking their userbase.
@dreamwaterzoo It was YOU who brought up single core performance.
The Intel suggestion makes perfect sense, when you consider a 13600K/14600K and a DDR4 LGA1700 board is often cheaper than the 5800X3D alone. Not to mention you end up with a much more well-rounded CPU and more modern platform.
@dreamwaterzoo The irony in calling someone else an idiot, then talking about single core performance, when the 5800X3D gets beaten even by the regular 5800X. Not to mention it gets demolished by the 13600K/14600K/250K, all of which are CHEAPER and FASTER across the board, gaming included.
@gallowshumours That doesn't justify complacency. Besides, quad cores were also enough, until AMD brought Ryzen to the mass market and then suddenly that started changing on a much faster pace than before.
@whatis16bits Even if someone doesn't "need" more cores/threads, that doesn't necessarily mean they can't make use of them. Just take shader compilation for example, which is more and more common nowadays, and takes ages on the lower core count SKUs.
@aQuocka The 8086K was a higher binned 8700K, and was the fastest gaming CPU on the market when it released. The 5800X3D neither is binned, nor is the fastest on the market - far from it, in fact. I don't think that's a good comparison at all. So there's barely any "novelty" aspect.
@CattelainFrano1 This has nothing to do with my original post. The high-end Ryzen SKUs are fine. It's the budget & midrange options that are lacking compared to Intel's offerings ever since 12th gen & onwards, and the whole reason I specifically mentioned the Ryzen 5 & Ryzen 7 lineups.
@yzonker@nepnep1111_ I guess we can thank Nova Lake for that... : ) But in all seriousness, it's about time they did it. The upgraded IOD is another big one. Zen 6 vs NVL genuinely might just be one of the few exciting things to look forward to in the current state of the hardware space.
