An Open Letter to Dr. Kaizer Motaung

Dear Dr. Motaung, I write this as a supporter who grew up on Kaizer Chiefs, not as someone who wants to tear the club down. Amakhosi still means something that most clubs in this country never will. That is why the last few seasons, and the start of this one, hurt so much. We are unbeaten in the league, and that is not nothing. Three wins and four draws from seven games, 13 points, and fourth place. But fourth place with this many dropped points is not the standard of a club that once defined South African football. Drawing 0-0 with Golden Arrows and 1-1 with Polokwane City, after already sharing the points with Sundowns and Richards Bay, is the same old pattern: we look good in spells, then fail to kill games. Sundowns and Pirates are already pulling away. Last season we finished third. This season already feels like another campaign of “not quite.” The problem is not only the pitch. It is how the club is run. Recruitment has been too slow and too cautious for a club of this size. We signed useful players Thabo Moloisane, Langelihle Phili, Renaldo Leaner, Adolf Mtasingwa, and Khanyisa Mayo made permanent but we still look short in the places that decide titles. Other big clubs spend with a plan. We still seem to shop late, hope late arrivals settle, and then watch points disappear because the squad is not complete. There is also a long-running goalkeeping question. Brandon Petersen has given loyal service, but the errors keep coming, and the debate about a settled number one has dragged on for years. A club like Chiefs cannot keep treating that position as an afterthought. On the field, the weaknesses are now obvious to every opponent. Coaches are targeting our lack of pace at the back. We create chances and then fail to finish them. Injuries have already disrupted Da Cruz’s plans. Individual mistakes keep turning winning positions into draws. That is not bad luck. That is squad construction and standards. If we are serious about competing with Sundowns and Pirates, these are the areas that need strengthening and the types of players worth chasing:
A proven goalscorer.
This is the loudest gap. We create, then waste. Junior Dion showed last season what a clinical finisher looks like in this league. Tshegofatso Mabasa, when available, still offers PSL know-how and presence in the box. We already have Mayo, Flávio Silva and younger options. Da Cruz himself asked for an offensive midfielder and different profiles so the team is less predictable. Kabelo Dlamini has been linked for a reason. A player like Lucas Ribeiro, if he can still be attracted, would raise the ceiling of the whole attack. We need someone who can receive between the lines and decide games, not just recycle possession.Left-back depth and pace in defence.
Bradley Cross, Nkanyiso Shinga and Paseka Mako are not enough if we want to play a high line and still survive transitions. Opponents have already said our full-backs and centre-backs can be pressed and outrun. A quicker left-back and more athletic cover in central defence would stop us from being exposed every time we push forward.A long-term goalkeeper solution.
Leaner was a sensible addition. That should be the start of a proper plan, not another season of rotating uncertainty and public debate after every mistake.Dr Motaung, you built this club. Nobody can take that away. But the supporters who fill stadiums, buy shirts and argue about Chiefs every weekend are not asking for miracles. We are asking for urgency, a clear football structure, and recruitment that matches the size of the badge.Unbeaten is not the same as good enough. Draws against sides we should beat will not bring a league title back to Naturena. The window for this season is already closing. The next one cannot be another year of almost.Amakhosi forever.
