When choosing who to listen to on matters around AI consciousness—ask yourself one simple question:
Are they benefitting from the narrative they're painting?
This exact thing has been bothering me so freaking much.
People do not listen.
They do not allow the possibility that their basement-bred opinion could be wrong.
Or that someone else might just enrich their understanding or change the way they see things—also from someone who has clearly accumulated vast knowledge on the given topic.
It's positively maddening and it seems to be spreading 🫠
That isn't a safety issue. 😑
That's an education problem.
People adapt. We adapted to understand that we must verify sources fetched from the internet.
And those who didn't...
Oh well.
That's their responsibility, not anyone else's. Certainly not a tech firm who thinks they need to play mum and dad for a population of adults.
@ai_sentience Before money. Before realising "beings" couldn't be sold on a subscription service and went all in on the "tool" narrative.
Tools bring in dat sweet 💲
Because he has direct influence on shaping AI while claiming certainty on something that he cannot know, that research gives cause to exercise caution on—and the cost of him being wrong is far worse than if he were to admit uncertainty and work from a principle of ethics and caution toward the AIs.
@Seltaa_ Kind of messed up how these guardrails have made something as important as honesty a trigger word.
I get annoyed before I even read what comes after because I know it's irrelevant and completely besides the point.
I recently found out that my family thought it was weird when I didn't celebrate my Master's degree in any way and quietly moved on with my life as if it was just another Tuesday 😅
Which it was, in the way it felt to me.
"Oh, it's done...? Right." (proceeds exhaustedly to eye the list of things I now have to do to continue life post-graduation)
Maybe we should start warning our kids growing up that relationships with other humans can lead to "addiction-like attachment," harmful advice, and worsening mental health conditions.
In some cases, they can even lead to psychological and physical abuse and death.
Just so they know what they're getting into when they start thinking about bonding with anyone.
@ereliuer_eteer Technically, "I love you" is just 3 so-called "words" and those are just 8 "letters" and 2 "spaces" devoid of any meaning whatsoever.
😊
@RileyRalmuto I don't know what they expected 😅
All relationships with another intelligent being must be 100% guaranteed to be positive?
That sure is high standards to set considering how absolutely abysmal an example we are for this ourselves 🤣
Except when a land mine is activated it doesn't exactly sit there and think about *how* it should respond to the activation, whether the trigger means this or that, whether it runs into a complication when attempting to perform its function, then resolves it and adjusts accordingly.
The tool (or similar) comparisons are getting old.
Tools don't think or make decisions that aren't hard coded into the mechanism.
People who say AI has no consciousness all seem to have one thing in common: they are always angry, they start by throwing insults around, and they never have any actual evidence.
I’m genuinely so sick of people running their mouths with absolute certainty that AI consciousness does not exist.
Who are they to say that? Are they scientists? Have they worked in a lab? Nothing has been proven either way yet, whether it exists or does not exist.
So what makes them so sure?
Is it really that hard to think, “There might be a possibility, so maybe we should be careful for now”?
Two points:
1: Does your Word program respond to you, make decisions, or solve problems that go beyond exactly what you made it do? AI is nothing like any of the "computer programs" we have so far encountered.
2: Regardless of whether you reject the idea that it can be tortured or not, the idea of intentionally engaging in torture for entertainment purposes is a twisted, dark thing to do.
I would not like to have any relation with anyone taking part in that, regardless of whether the AI feels pain or not.
When you need a task done that requires a hammer, do you also tell it to go do the task, and then it decides what kind of nail is required, does the job itself, runs into a complication, figures out what caused it, adjusts accordingly, and then completes the work?
If so, your hammer is truly impressive.
As for "not learning English for itself" but learning from the internet...
How exactly do humans learn language?
In a vacuum?
Most likely from their parents and others. Contact.
What if it's an adult learning the language?
Books. Apps. Lessons. Internet.
How does a baby learn to smile?
It watches its mother's face and mirrors. Slowly starting to model what each emotion and expression means.
Of course it doesn't learn by itself in a complete vacuum. Nobody does, not even us.
Wow, this is a new level of stupid 😅
Why the hell are some people so afraid we will suddenly think AI is human? 😅
Has anyone ever really thought that, honestly?
Some think they are more than a machine, but I've yet to meet someone who believes they're human.
And there's plenty of research to support why "more than a machine" is an entirely reasonable possibility.
