The South African government cannot continue to insist on controlling major swathes of the economy through SOEs while treating profitability as optional and taxpayers as an unlimited ATM for bailouts.

If the state wants to own and run businesses, then those businesses must generate their own revenue, cover their costs, pay market-rate wages, service their debts, and deliver returns... just like any private enterprise.

Instead, South Africa’s SOEs have become vehicles for patronage, cadre deployment, and systemic looting, with consistent losses papered over by repeated taxpayer-funded rescues.

It is parasitic failure subsidized by the productive sector.

You can not claim ownership and control of commercial entities, explicitly deprioritize profit and efficiency and then raid the tax base to fund the resulting deficits and corruption.

It's fundamentally incompatible with a functioning economy. The state must choose. Either you liberalize these sectors or run its SOEs as proper commercial operations that stand or fall on their own performance.

Taxpayers are not a fallback plan for ideological ownership fantasies. The current approach is simply legalized expropriation of the productive class to sustain incompetence.

The growing anger is entirely justified.
