Living History Field Trips!
See if you don't think this is true: children take a powerful interest in history.
I think it's because -- fresh into this world as they are -- they are anxious to know how they got here and what went before them. When I was a child, in the 1960s, I was obsessed with our family's 1940s and 1950s scrapbooks. It felt like a chapter I had missed and that I was catching up on. The clothing was different. The haircuts were different. Why, for example, did one of my brother's friend sport a Mohawk on his way back to Valley Forge with the boy scouts? The women seemed to wear dresses all the time. Some of the men wore a hat to work. Growing up in the live oak forests of Arcadia, I wondered what it all might have looked like when Lucky Baldwin was alive. Any saloons? Any Indians? Did people ride horses to church?
If we had not gone into the living history business for schools, I might have concluded I was just a nerdy little history kid, but just yesterday, I saw a little girl in a pioneer prairie dress very anxious to run around on the grass and pretend it was 1870. I've seen little boys beg their mothers for pine muskets. I've seen caravans of minivans full of children in tricorn hats.
We all want to know where we came from, and what made this place, this country, that we celebrate.
We're happy to report that living history field trips are on the upswing again. We have 4,000 more students on the books now than we did at the same time last year.
AND we're getting a lot more families who just take the day off and join us.
Join us! Be a kid again!

Newsflash: Pam Bondi agrees with the Left that "hate speech" isn't constitutionally protected. This is just so friggin sad. It would almost be funny if she wasn't ... the Attorney General of the United States.
This is psychotic. The federal government cannot, in fact, prosecute you for refusing to print a message you disagree with—which was core to Republicans' ideology until all of 5 seconds ago. I am speechless.
Yesterday our son told us he wanted to record the waves at the beach with this boombox (or that's what we called it when we were kids). He loaded it up with D batteries and we brought it down to the water. It uses tapes, old school, remember those? He sat it there on the towel for a while and we just hung out swimming, playing, chatting.
On the way home he pressed rewind (remember rewind?!) for a while and then played it. Sure enough, the sound of the waves with the faint sound of our voices in the background.
I loved that he wanted to do that and I really loved that it was a boombox and a tape just like the ones we used to use as kids. The 90s were a pretty good time to be a kid. We had pretty good tech like this. It does everything he needs. He doesn't need an iPad. Also, to be honest, the quality has that old school sound too anyway.
At dinner we were talking about it. My wife and I said we will all listen to it in the winter and be sad. He said that we will listen to it in the winter and be happy.
Children and parents.
Ancillary reminder that the president has no authority to “delay,” and that all but the first delay was flatly illegal, and even that one didn’t follow the law as written.
You don't have to abandon your kids to their online life. Go through their histories. Make them scroll group chats in front of you. Get to know who their friends are and what kind of family they come from. You aren't helpless to let them drift away into whatever group they find.
U-Pick!
We're picking some nice heirlooms this Saturday 10 AM - 5 PM, the "Snow" Apple and "Maiden Blush." (See graphic for details.)
We also have TWO LIVE BANDS (the Marvels at the Packing Shed, Stone Pantry English fiddles at the tavern), tomahawk, archery, candle-dipping, barbecue tri-tip and chicken, great food at the Colonial Tavern, fine beer, wine, hard and sweet cider. It's been a tough week. Get out in the open air and visit with us!

During tonight’s press conference, Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox stated that “Chinese and Russian bots” are trying to “instill disinformation and encourage violence,” following yesterday’s shooting of Charlie Kirk. “Our adversaries want violence,” with the governor calling for people to “put their phones down” and spend a little time with their families.
People should be able to use their free speech to show us who they are.
If people want to use this moment to declare that they support violence and killing and they they're rotten and soulless, that's good!
People should be free to show us what they're worth.
And we can dispense with the gun-control talking points, too. An "older-model .30 caliber hunting rifle" is exactly the type of firearm that those who call for stricter laws insist that they don't wish to touch. That gun is legal in England.
In my hometown of Halifax, Israel will have to compete against Canada in their Davis Cup match without spectators because Palestinian "activists" have made it so unsafe. But that isn't enough for them. Now they're asking @CBC to cancel their livestream of the tennis match. This movement isn't about peace in the Middle East as much as it is about the complete isolation and suppression of Jewish life. If you consider yourself to be part of the "silent majority," now might be a good time to speak up.
