I now understand we appeared before this committee after 19 years- first time since 2007.

The chair is a Turk, the country rapporteurs on India are a Greek and a South Korean.

There may be a good reason for us to engage with the Committee and have an opportunity to present our case but the net result doesn’t seem to have served us.

The published version of proceedings shows how intrusive, uninformed and ideologically motivated this committee is.

The Committee members have no understanding of the complexities of governing a hugely diverse country of 1.4 b people like India.

These well paid UN civil servants have no experience of governance. They tabulate oriented information.

Not that Indian governance has no flaws. But this external monitoring is a farce. The pressure for improvements has to come from within our democratic polity.

This UN human rights business is a charade.
