“I can because I think I can”. Carolina Marin’s mantra, exemplifying her unwavering belief that her dreams could become reality.
But a dream without a plan is just a fantasy. Champions therefore need more than just self-belief, they also need to believe in the plan, the process, and the coach. But that’s not easy when you come from a country which has virtually no history of previous success in your sport.
Carolina left home at 14 to live and train in Madrid putting all her trust and belief in coach Fernando Rivas, who with innovative ideas based on his scientific background, masterminded an astonishing success story.
Olympic, World and European Championship Gold medals were already achieved when in 2019 Carolina ruptured the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in her right knee.
The plan and belief in the process of recovery was just as steadfast and precise. But in the build-up to the Tokyo Games, she ruptured the ACL in her left knee. Still with undiminished belief she yet again fought back from surgery to once again become one of the main contenders for the major titles.
There’s no doubt sport is a glorious and wonderful thing, but it can also be oh so cruel.
After twice fighting back from catastrophic injuries to both knees, in the semifinal of the #Paris2024 Games, while seemingly cruising to a second Olympic final, and in an unbearably cruel twist of fate, she once again ruptured her right ACL.
After recently undergoing yet more knee surgery, Carolina has said her aim now is to prioritise health over goals, so that for the first time in years she can live without pain. A simple and very human aspiration, but I suspect that subtle shift in priority changes everything, as success is dependent on the burning desire to achieve specific goals.
Whilst her accentuated verbal celebrations and total self-belief (which some perceived as arrogance) meant she didn’t always endear herself to some of the #badminton fans, no one can argue that her extraordinary resilience and outstanding achievements should be acknowledged and applauded.
Against all the odds, Carolina Marin’s whole career has embodied the astonishing power of belief.
