In order to foster true transformational change, the mindset & mentality of those involved must also shift. Old thinking does not foster change. We must all work to elevate the work & cease being hindrances to growth. If we can’t support the work, then we shouldn’t be part of it.
In our pursuit of excellence, we should be our own best critic. Others should not be able to determine our worth. Their interests are selfishly motivated. Measured, honest, and genuine self-assessment is where our true value lies. We must never sell ourselves short.
There are moments in life when we have to take stock of who we are & what is our purpose. Upon doing so & determining that those moments fail to meet our purpose or bring us happiness, we must make decisions that allow us to recommit to our purpose & happiness and change course.
Our worth is not determined by the cavalier opinions of others. We will always face criticism, both fairly and unfairly. We must determine our own worth, however, by sticking to our convictions and leaning into the work. Remain focused and resist being dismayed. #MPSRising
This morning for #NCGASchoolday Representative @JohnTorbett and I visited Kiser Elementary in @GastonSchools ! We engaged with students who are prepping for their end of grade tests.
When we went into classrooms, Rep. Torbett asked teachers, “What can I do to help you?” (Excellent question!) I loved watching teachers smile when he asked that. He listened intently as they advocated for their students.
Here are some of the takeaways from our conversations with educators and students:
-Teachers are working so hard and using innovative methods to get their students ready for their end of grade exams. This is on everyone’s mind this time of year. It’s a cloud over the end of the school year.
-Students as young as 3rd grade are experiencing real anxiety over state testing.
-The tests are too long and have too high stakes for teachers and students.
-End of year testing does not tell the whole story of a student’s progress in a year.
-The teacher compensation schedule needs to be adjusted so teachers at every level have incentive to stay.
-Beginning teachers need more support: time to observe, prep, plan, reflect, etc.
-4th and 5th grade class sizes need to be capped so students can be successful.
It was a wonderful visit! Thank you, Wiley and Rep. Torbett for having me today! 💚

This birthday will be one for the books!! I just successful defended my dissertation. Best words of the day…”Congratulations, Dr. Vera Woolard”. Extremely thankful for the family and friends that have been on this journey with me for the past 2 1/2 years. Thanks @davidb_young !
Thank you @CCSSuptConnelly and the @CumberlandCoSch Board of Education. Humbled and appreciative. That building has special meaning as I started my leadership journey there as principal of what was Walker Elementary School in 1979.
Tonight, the Cumberland County Board of Education approved the renaming of the district’s Educational Resource Center to the Dr. William “Bill” Harrison Educational Resource Center.
Today is a day that will forever resonate in my memories. My dissertation proposal was APPROVED!! Thanks to so many of my friends that called, text, and supported me along the way. Special thanks to @klanemarion for serving as my content specialist 😘😉
