I agree with this. The amount of people who clearly did not read this and went straight to attacking her is insane to me. The issue is primarily when the streamers (vtubers and those who are face cam) who quit their jobs to stream full time but then ask for donations every month. You SHOULD have a back up plan. You SHOULD have money saved before you decide to quit your job to stream. To quit your job to pursue something full time without a way to support yourself in case you are short on something is irresponsible. So yes, it is a bad look when you are asking for donations each and every month.
I work 2 jobs and occasionally asked for help for my medical costs because it is expensive. So I'm not saying it to shame anyone who is asking for help once in awhile. I'm just saying I agree with her take.
Everyone is talking about VTubers asking for donations and not being employed.
Here's my luke warm take:
If you are unable to work due to a disability there is nothing wrong with being transparent with your community about extra financial support you may need.
If you are let go from your job but still actively looking and just VTubing full time during the gap. I see no issue with being transparent about the support you may need.
Where I have an issue is people who I have seen actively quit their jobs BECAUSE they're ''making enough from VTubing to go full time.'' Then it's EVERY MONTH that they're begging, and it's not like 'hey I'm $100 bucks short here.' It's literally on a monthly basis 'hey guys here's the bills I still haven't paid and they're due tomorrow: $2k rent, $300 utilities, $200 needed for groceries so please donate and help me!' If you have to beg every month you're not making enough to go full time and you should not have quit your job. It's always good to have 6 months worth of living expenses saved up before you do anything like that, and ensure you can 100% sustain yourself even on a bad month. It's also not a great look if you're begging for people to pay multiple bills every month while also buying $200+ pieces of artwork. Take care of your living expenses before you invest back in your work. I know your favorite artist may be struggling and you just want to support them, but unfortunately you need to make sure you're caring for yourself first.
Also I don't think there's anything wrong asking for donations to specifically pay for art or emotes etc. For me personally I will pay for that stuff upfront out of my own pocket, and then pay myself back with donothon money/money from my community. The donations are still going towards the art, I just made sure I could cover it without relying on my community for that.
@puppkats Exactly. It just isn't sustainable unless you have sponsorships, incoming from videos on YouTube AND subs. It is extremely difficult to make money on streaming alone.
June is Pride Month & as your friendly pansexual & polyamorous gremlin, I'll absolutely be celebrating. ๐๐๐
However, it's also Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. ๐
Both conversations deserve space.
Check in on the men in your life. Tell your friends you care about them. Normalize therapy, vulnerability & asking for help. Nobody should feel like they have to carry everything alone.
A simple "how are you really doing?" can go a lot further than you think. โจ
