🚨WHY YOU SHOULD NO LONGER USE HASHTAGS🚨
This will be the ULTIMATE thread on Twitter/X hashtags and why you should stop using them if your goal is to grow your audience
This is important info for ALL X users but it's especially important information for artists
This will be a long post but I'll include a tl;dr at the end. Like I said, I want this to be the ultimate thread for twitter hashtag information.
I will do my best to include answers to many frequently asked questions I get about them. If you have other questions then please ask in the replies and I will answer
This is like, the 5th times I've made a post about why hashtags are bad and honestly I'm getting exhausted explaining it over and over lmao so PLEASE share this one around so people can better educate themselves (and stop asking me 🤣)
I'll be sure to link other helpful growth threads I've made in the replies as well in case you want to learn more. I've done a bunch of studying on the inner workings of twitter's algorithm, even going as far as looking through the code for evidence and have been making threads to help YOU for months now!
OKAY ALL THE EXPLANATIONS ARE OVER LET'S GET INTO THIS
The misconception:
The big reason that people refuse to give up on hashtags is because it has been ingrained in our brains that hashtag=outreach. This is due to how socials like twitter used their algorithm to determine who a post should be shown to
This information was widespread, however, the news that hashtags have essentially "died" was not really huge news that got passed around
THIS IS THAT NEWS THAT I'M ATTEMPTING TO PASS AROUND
I only really know about X's algorithm so I can't speak for other socials, but X now operates off of keyword priority. Meaning that the algorithm is reading your post to determine where to place it, not the hashtags
HOWEVER, hashtags were so ingrained into the algorithm that it's not possible to just phase them out altogether (like flipping a switch to turn them off.) So what happens now is this:
Twitter reads your post - finds keywords to determine who to show it to - then sees all these hashtags and gets confused
This more often than not tends to lead to your posts getting shown to almost no one. There's even a line in X's code that specifically penalizes your post for using too many hashtags. I'll try to remember to post proof for all this with screenshots in the replies but if I forget, please remind me lol
Tl;dr: Hashtags confuse the algorithm, plain and simple.
Want to see an example of a good caption that doesn't rely on hashtags?
"Hey! I'm back with more OC art of my character ____. What do my artmoots think about it?"
This is very basic, but X will see the words "art" "OC" and "artmoots" and know where to place it. No hashtag needed
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: But what if I use it to make searching for my artwork easier?
A: Unfortunately that does clash with the algorithm. It's a lame side effect 😔
Q: Is it bad that my posts with hashtags have more traction than those without?
A: There are some rare times where hashtags do work. But honestly I would consider that more like coincidence. Either that or you aren't using keywords correctly so the hashtags are attempting to pull that weight. Also the algorithm is likely trained to see hashtags on your posts because you use them so much so it takes a bit of time for it to relearn your stuff without them. I still say it's ultimately better to stop using them altogether
Q: then why do i get no attention?
A: It's very possible you aren't promoting yourself correctly. I see tons of artists not promoting correctly. Sadly you can't only rely on artistic skills to get you attention on social media
Q: I thought using a few was okay? I may have been going overboard with them sometimes but I heard using one-three doesn't hurt your performance
A: That's an old and kinda misunderstood rumor. It's actually the less the better but if you feel you MUST use hashtags, then only use 1-3. But systems these days work more off of keywords so hashtags confuse the algorithm a lot
Q: Aren't some specific hashtags okay to use?
A: Yes, but you have to use them correctly, and that can be difficult to do since it's a bit of a guessing game. For example: You can't throw # artshare and # artmoots on every single post and expect it to do well. You have to curate a post designed specifically around that topic the right way. Even then, the algorithm could still decide it's not used correctly and hide your post
