Blizzard almost gave Overwatch’s new combo-heavy hero Shion a Devil May Cry-style ranking system, but the idea was eventually scrapped.
Lead hero designer Scott Kennedy said the team experimented with “a style meter and style rankings” similar to Devil May Cry but decided against it because “we didn’t want players to feel like they had to optimize for style points.”
Instead, Blizzard wanted players to focus on “making smart decisions” and using Shion’s abilities effectively rather than chasing high combo grades.
Even so, Kennedy said the team still wanted to capture “the fantasy of a character action game” with Shion’s design.
