It's something that's been seen for years, which makes me raise an eyebrow when different standards seem to be applied to different macaques. 🙄

If one behaviour is accepted for some individuals, then surely the same understanding should be given to others. Consistency matters.

Either way, Otome and her family clearly haven't forgotten where the snacks are served! 😂🧡🐒
Punch wasn't exactly handed a rulebook saying, "Once you reach 10 months old, you're no longer allowed to stand by the door, ask for milk, or seek comfort from the people who helped raise you." 🙄🐒

What planet do some people live on?

Punch has spent his entire life associating the keepers with safety, comfort, food, and reassurance. It's hardly surprising that he still approaches them. From what I've seen, it's often less about food and more about familiarity and comfort.

And let's be honest—he's not the only macaque who does it. Otome-chan still feeds from the buckets, hangs around the door, and approaches the keepers too. Yet somehow that's accepted, while Punch gets criticised for similar behaviour.

At the end of the day, Punch only knows the life he's lived. Expecting him to suddenly forget everything and behave according to someone else's imaginary rulebook seems a bit unrealistic to me.

He's still learning, still growing, and still figuring out his place in the world. 🧡🐒Most of the time, Punch is at that door because he's scared, nervous, uncertain, or simply senses that something isn't quite right. And honestly? He usually isn't wrong.

People keep talking about how Punch should change, but why should he? He's behaving according to the life experiences he's had. The keepers became his source of safety, comfort, and reassurance when he was abandoned. That's not something you simply switch off overnight.

If a hand-reared macaque becoming attached to humans is a concern, then that should be part of the long-term planning from the very beginning. Saving an abandoned saru is the easy part. The real challenge is creating a future where that individual can thrive.

History has shown that simply placing hand-reared macaques back into an enclosure and expecting everything to work itself out doesn't always produce the best outcomes. Every monkey is different and every situation is different. Can't be expected to defend for themselves.

Perhaps the conversation shouldn't be about why Punch behaves the way he does. Perhaps it should be about whether new ideas and approaches are needed when it comes to the long-term care and integration of hand-reared macaques.

Common sense tells us that early experiences shape behaviour. Punch looked like a one-month-old baby, playing around Miyakoshi. He was so cute and innocent 😇. He seemed to be asking Dad to let him climb the tower 🗼. Such a pretty little kid back then... now he has become a total troublemaker 💥💥💥😂.
