China has launched flares at a Philippine Coast Guard plane, with Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Rear Admiral @jaytaryela on board, flying near Mischief Reef in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Philippines.

The plane was filming the massive scale of the illegal land reclamation by the Chinese government in the area.

China established control there in 1995, initially claiming that it was “only building a shed for fishermen.”

Today, they have built artificial islands with a total reclaimed area of 1,379 acres (558 hectares) which they have developed into China’s largest military outpost in the South China Sea, featuring runways, hangars, radar systems and air defense systems.

In 2016, the United Nations arbitral tribunal ruling (Philippines v. China) under UNCLOS declared that Mischief Reef is falls within the Philippines’ EEZ and that China’s claims and activities there violate Philippine rights.

China rejected the ruling.

The reef lies only 120 nautical miles from the Philippines and is more than 600 nautical miles away from China.

China takes advantage of low visibility to swarm the Filipino waters, then operate in very close proximity to Filipino vessels & eventually seclude the Filipino ships from its convoy. Making it an easy prey for the Chinese goons.

This shows the massive scale of the illegal reclamation by the Chinese government on Panganiban Reef (Mischief Reef), located well within our Exclusive Economic Zone. Whenever our aircraft pass through the area during Maritime Domain Awareness flights, China has the audacity to challenge us claiming that they have “indisputable sovereignty” in this area—and in some instances, like the one shown here, they have even launched flares toward our aircraft.

It is worth noting that China first illegally occupied Panganiban Reef, initially claiming they were only building a shelter for fishermen. Today, it stands as one of the largest Chinese military installations in the entire South China Sea. We should not forget that the reef lies only about 120 nautical miles from the coastline of Palawan, yet more than 600 nautical miles away from China.
