Coral Week USVI brought together the community in a shared mission: to raise awareness about coral reef conservation. 🪸🌊 Florida Sea Grant Coral Rescue Coordinator Noel Carrera led free tours for St. Thomas residents to their local reefs to foster deeper connections with natural resources and highlight the importance of coral conservation.
The tours were supported by the USVI Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) and funding from the @NOAACoral Program to support reef research, education, and outreach in the U.S. Virgin Islands during this action-packed week.

Last year was the hottest on record with mass bleaching across the Caribbean and W. Atlantic. Our outplanting sites & nurseries were impacted by warm sea temps but resilient corals persist. At Lovango Resort some corals survived amid bleaching. Excited to track their survival!
Our C. natans corals are ready to be taken offshore! Corals were spawned at @floridaaquarium and larvae was settled in our nursery in September 2023. We will be testing new predator exclusion devices for these lab grown corals in the offshore nursery alongside @NSUCoralNursery !
That’s a wrap on #reeffutures 2024!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for coming to Reef Futures with open ears and open hearts.
We hope you all made meaningful connections, felt a sense of strong community, learned lots, and are leaving with a sense of hope!
